Today we’d like to introduce you to Shannon Ducker.
Shannon, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I grew up in Red Oak TX and graduated with a Bachelor’s in Architecture from Texas Tech University in 2010 and was having trouble finding a full-time job in architecture because of the economy at the time. I have always been the type of person that can’t stand doing nothing, and event planning was something I had always had in the back of my mind, so I found an unpaid internship with an event planning company in Dallas. I knew I wanted to do event planning full time when I could not sleep the night before an event because I was so excited to get to work the next day. The crazy thing is I was not even getting paid (It was crazy I was driving one hour to her office and one hour back through $10.00 tolls and working 10-16-hour days and still loved every minute of it without making a dime).
To be honest I really don’t know exactly why I decided to start my own business it just felt right at the time. After my year internship ended, I started working for an Architecture firm thinking maybe I wasn’t being realistic, and I was miserable working (55-60 hour weeks and not enjoying what I was working on) and my husband (a business owner as well) told me… “Why are you working all these hours working for someone else it is obvious you are meant to own your own business and do something you love” and then I decided to save money and just do it. It was as simple as that!
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Of course! Just like anything in life there have struggles along the way. Mainly when I first opened my business it was hard for people to take me seriously because of my age, but learned to let my work speak for itself. And referrals are now my main source of new business.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Shannon Rose Events story. Tell us more about the business.
Shannon Rose Events is a wedding planning and design company based out of Fort Worth TX that services Fort Worth, Dallas, and Austin Texas.
We are known, by most vendors and brides, as a fun and energetic coordination company that is very detail oriented. I like to keep the experience fun, while also being very efficient! I honestly don’t believe planning your wedding has to be stressful at all. We make this happen through a well thought out order of booking vendors, questionnaires, timelines, and treating my clients how I would like to be treated on my wedding day. (Excited!)
My architecture and interior design background set me apart from others in my industry. I do all my floor plans to scale in AutoCAD because I believe the way a space is designed not only can affect the flow of the event, but also the mood. I also create unique design boards, similar to those at an interior design firm, that helps a bride to easily visualize the design for the wedding. From the color scheme, to the altar set up, to how each napkin will be folded…. we display it all!
I am so proud of the brides we have gotten the chance to work with. I still can’t believe sometimes that I get to not only be a part of someone’s biggest day of their lives, but that they trust me to help their dream come to life.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I guess you can say I have “lucked” into meeting some amazing clients. That make me excited to come to work every day! But mostly it’s been hard work. I work, like most business owners, 7 days a week and to get my business started I called multiple venues, photographers, DJs…etc just to get my name out there. I put my heart and soul into each wedding I complete and I am lucky to have clients that appreciate and see all the hard work I put into each event.
