Today we’d like to introduce you to Shannon Terrell.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
My photography business kicked off when I married my husband, Joe. He had already been DJing weddings for two years when I met him, so it made sense for us to photograph and DJ weddings together! At first, transitioning into portrait and wedding photography felt daunting, because you have to truly believe and have confidence in your art. It took time for me to understand my own vision while still collaborating with couples for their vision. I learned that images weren’t enough for me but I wanted my clients to experience falling more in love during their time in front of my camera. I think that has helped us in our business because people want to work with people who really care about them and we do!
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
We have seen some difficulties for us while building our business, such as knowing what to invest in and when is the right time to take that leap of faith. I also struggled with comparison, and I still do at times. I see all these amazing artists photographing things I also would like to do and experience but I naively believed that those ‘epic’ moments are better. When I changed my mindset to believe that epic moments are ones spent with the people you love, suddenly everything feels real. Everything photographs better with more emotion and that’s what I strive for – regardless of location, I want people to feel known.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
We are Century Tree Productions, a husband and wife DJ and photography team based out of Bryan, Texas and serving all over Texas. DJing has been the staple in our business for five years, and photography for two years. We are known for exuberant love and confetti-filled dance floors! The way to embrace new couples, from the first consultation to our thank you letter is all personal, intentional and real. We don’t like contrived weddings and we like a good time. It means the world to us to witness the intimate moments of two becoming one and then ending the night with an unbelievably wild dance floor – think of glow sticks, fog, animal masks, confetti cannons, laser lights, bubbles and everyone singing along to their favorite songs!
What were you like growing up?
I was an oddball kid, spending one day trying to learn code to the next trying out for a new sports team. I wanted to learn everything! I tended to be more introverted but since, that made me nervous about making friends, I liked to be really goofy with weird noises randomly inserted into sentences or after someone else’s jokes – somehow, kids liked it. Simple brownie points for a kid. I just wanted to be doing something with friends most of time, whether hiking in Yosemite or swimming in someone’s backyard. My dad use to photograph with film, so I was always intrigued with camera but I never learned until the end of high school.
