Meet Sharonda Lawson of Bakers D’lite

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sharonda Lawson.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I have always had a passion for baking/cooking (my family deemed me the Betty Crocker of the family), Growing up I was always watching my grandmother and my father cook (he taught me so much). When my father passed away in 2006 I wanted to do something special in his memory, so I started writing a cookbook as a way of saying “thank you, dad, for everything you taught me”, I titled the cookbook Daddy Taught Me Well (it’s available online).

As I was putting together the cookbook I would post photos of my food on my social media page and my friends would ask if I would be selling any, and the answer was NO!…. fast forward a year… We have a large family of 10 children (8 at the time) and it was getting pretty expensive to constantly order custom cakes, so I decided to use [an unknown] God-given talent and try my hand at custom cakes.

My first cake was a baseball sitting on top of a field for my son’s birthday (he is a baseball player). Once I posted the cake I was asked again the same question of would I consider selling cakes. I said at that moment if I have you all support 100% I will. I am 100% self-taught and needless to say I shock myself and am constantly in awe of this talent that the Lord has blessed me with!

When I was looking for a name for my company, I wanted it to be special and I also wanted to pay homage to my grandmother (Clyde Baker) and my father (Howard Pierson Sr ~ who taught me most of what I know!) and hence was born Bakers D’lite! I got to where I am today because I believe in providing the best product and the best service to my customers no matter the dollar amount that they spend. I value all of my customers and treat them like they are family. Most of my customer base comes from word of mouth!

Has it been a smooth road?
It has not been a very smooth road. I have had a few struggles along the way. I have burned my oven out multiple times and have had to literally get the keys to my neighbors home and use her oven to fulfill the orders that were due.

I was in a head-on collision December 29, 2017, which left me with a shattered leg and I had to have surgery. That put me out of commission for over 3 months and it was very depressing, however, my customers were very caring and understanding. They checked on me and offered help in any way that they could. Some of my customers even refused a refund due to their order having to be canceled.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
My business is providing sweet treats! I am the owner, the baker and the creator!! I specialize in custom cakes but I also provide cookies, cake pops, and other treats as well.

As a company, I am most proud of the fact that I am a self-taught baker and have come so far in my talent. What sets me apart from others is not only my pricing but my customer service. I treat my customers with warmth and care like they are a part of my family. I treat them the way I would want to be treated by a company that I am giving my business to.

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
This Metropolitan Area is massive and there is always someone looking to purchase something sweet! I would definitely recommend someone starting out here because it is not difficult to gain a client base, especially if you offer superb service.
