Meet Shaun Hiller of CrossFit TBR “The Bearded Rooster” in North DFW

Today we’d like to introduce you to Shaun Hiller.

Shaun, before we jump into specific questions about your work, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
In February of 2004, I was involved in a serious motor vehicle accident that ended a career in Law Enforcement, which set me back both physically and mentally. Due to the seriousness of my injury, I gained a ton of weight and lost a bunch of self-esteem. Determined to get back into some semblance of who I was, I turned to CrossFit.

I signed up for a local CrossFit class near my place of work back in 2008, in Plano Tx. I was surprised that the coaches at that time weren’t phased in the least about my injury, and were more than willing to scale and modify my workouts to help me achieve my fitness goals. As time progressed, I was told by several different individuals that I had the qualities of a “Coach,” and should consider instructing CrossFit. After careful consideration, I attended my first Level 1 Trainers course and made steps towards teaching CrossFit. over the years, I had the opportunity to train folks at a couple of different fitness locations, before deciding on opening up my OWN CrossFit “Box” in my wife and I’s town of Anna TX. My wife wasn’t too keen on the idea of opening up a CrossFit Box at first, considering we had no real “background” in owning/operating a business. With a little finesse and MUCH discussion, I managed to convince my wife that opening a CrossFit Box was the right choice for us and our community.

The idea behind the name of CrossFit TBR was hatched over coffee with my wife; we owned several chickens at the time and wanted to combine my trademark beard (of which many recognize me by), along with her ever-growing poultry hobby. Thus, we came up with the name CrossFit TBR, “The Bearded Rooster.” We trademarked and LLC’d in 2013, and held our First CrossFit Class in a SMALL 900 sqft facility in Anna TX, in January of 2014.

With the growth of our gym, we found the opportunity to be part of an environment that supports and strives to make healthy, strong, well-rounded individuals, NO MATTER what condition the body is in. Though I will never come close to the level of conditioning I was at before the accident, CrossFit has enabled me to better manage my injury, thus, allowing a better quality of life. I truly enjoy coaching CrossFit and helping people with their physical goals, as well as being a part of the great community. It is a rewarding feeling as a coach to help someone accomplish something they once thought was impossible.

CrossFit TBR is a family-owned business, now operating in a 5000 sqft. the facility, with the day to day operations being run by my wife/Owner, Mrs. Stacey Hiller. In November, CrossFit TBR will have been open for 6 years, providing fitness, health, and wellness coaching for all of North Texas.

Has it been a smooth road?
For the most part, it’s been a smooth road. Some of the struggles we’ve faced, besides learning the ins and outs of owning and running a business, have been doing so with your partner, of which is your spouse! We also have three children who are active in martial arts, football and band, as well as I (Shaun) have a full-time job at a local engineering firm! Oh, and did I mention that we own a 22-acre hobby farm, with a boatload of (you guessed it) Chickens, Rooster, Goose, cows, beehives, dogs….. You get the idea… Managing all of these facets of our lives can be quite challenging!

Please tell us more about your work, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
We are CrossFit Gym, specializing in Coach led CrossFit classes. Our classes focus on generalized fitness, as well as Olympic Lifting. What we are most proud of, and, that sets our gym apart from others is our COMMUNITY. We have fostered many lifelong relationships through our gym, as have others, including several marriages. Our gym is much like the theme song from the 80’s TV show “Cheers,” a place where everyone knows your name… We are a FAMILY.

What were you like growing up?
I grew up in Northern California in the great outdoors. I spent the majority of my youth outdoors, in the mix of things. Hiking, biking, surfing, skateboarding, dirt biking, if it was outdoors, I have probably done it. My wife, Stacey Hiller grew up in Victorville Ca. She was very active in sports, color guard, and fencing (foil).

It’s hard to find another community as tight and open to new members as TBR. It’s a super community with a family atmosphere that Shaun and Stacey have created and maintain. It’s not just about working out but also helping each other in times of need from fence repair to moving day. They’re great about having benefit workouts to help out people that could use a little appreciation if nothing else. Pot-luck workouts on Memorial Day and other special events are so much fun and everyone that shows up is guaranteed a sweat!
