Today we’d like to introduce you to Shaun Marshall and Carl McGowan.
Shaun and Carl, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I was originally a graduate of the School of Visual Arts at the University of North Texas in Denton with a focus upon Painting, Art History, Graphic Design, and Marketing and after school began working for the Sullivan and Perkins Design Firm. Although I loved having such a prestigious creative outlet, eventually I realized I was better suited and driven for the creative freedoms of self-employment. With my love of Painting, Architecture and Art History, I soon found myself interested in homes and their more ornate finishes.
My partner Carl had a similar drive towards self-employment. He had spent over 20 years working in theatre, both on and off stage. His work in professional fine art and murals as well as prop, costume, and scenic design blended perfectly with my work in decorative finishing. We have worked together for over 15 years, and with over 30+ years of collective experience in painting, design & art history, our creative collaborations in life and business allow to continually offer our clients the very best ideas and options for their space and budget.
In addition to the Dallas-Fort Worth area, we have worked across the United States from Maine to San Diego and many places in between. We create a wide variety of painted decorations for interior surfaces including murals, tromp l’oeil, custom stenciling, gilded surfaces, Venetian plasters, fresco, faux marbles, faux bois, & various other painting techniques.
We work regularly with top designers, directly with the homeowner, or as a collaboration with both, as all of our work is custom designed. Projects start with seeing a client’s plans or an on-site visit where we may present a variety of options. We coordinate our designs and ideas along with the client’s colors, wallpapers, fabrics, and inspiration photos to keep in harmony with their personal needs and style.
Has it been a smooth road?
Certainly, during times of recession, it has been important to keep pushing even harder to keep work flowing in when money has been tight for the country or when our wealthier clientele are holding off on art and more lavish amenities.
Most of all, it is important for us to stay aware, informed and prepared for the latest trends in interiors so that we can constantly be creating work that stays interesting to both our clients and ourselves while also tapping into classic design enough to stand the tests of time, trends and fads.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Shaun Christopher Designs – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of and what sets you apart from others.
We create a wide variety of painted decorations for interior surfaces including murals, tromp l’oeil, custom stenciling, gilded surfaces, Venetian plasters, fresco, faux marbles, faux bois, & various other painting techniques. Our work spans from modern and contemporary designs to classic and historical design.
We seek to not only satisfy our client’s needs and ideas but also to elevate what they originally imagined to a place not previously considered or thought possible. Our clients receive work that is specific and custom to them and not something ordered online or chosen from a book. Many people see their home as a very personal and intimate expression of themselves and we make every effort to make those dreams and visualizations a reality.
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
Dallas more and more is becoming a true melting pot of a city that accepts all kinds and celebrates all kinds. Its business and commerce is growing as well as its arts and entertainment sectors. We are capable of being a real example to the rest of Texas and the country at large for what diversity, equality, and acceptance in a thriving community can be.
If we could suggest room for improvement in Dallas, it would follow the same idea as what we love about Dallas, but with a focus on education. If our children are educated more effectively and together with other children who come from different backgrounds, ethnicities, and faiths, then ultimately the future of Dallas can only be brighter.
… Oh and more vegan restaurants, we could use more vegan restaurants!!
