Meet Shavauntis (Bri) Brown of BNcredible Beauty in Lancaster

Today we’d like to introduce you to Shavauntis Brown.

Shavauntis, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Growing up as a little girl, I always admired my mother and took a liking to her works in the beauty industry. I sat and watched her do hair at her salon and also went along with her when she did Mary Kay parties. I knew then that I had a love for beauty. I was mesmerized by the art and the way it made women feel when they looked in the mirror once they were done. I then started to do hair just like her and play in makeup, “a kitchen tician” is what she use to call me. I also loved playing dress-up because that was the time I got to play in my mom’s makeup. I would do my makeup and my sister’s.

Later on in life, I got my makeup done for my college graduation pictures and fell in love even more with the art of makeup, especially since the way of doing it was so different than back in the day. My cousin, Nichie Devore, and I started doing bigger makeup parties together thus birthing BNcredible. We work as an independent artist and work together when there are large parties of 8+ people. I haven’t been able to put the brushes down since!

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has, by far, not been the smoothest of roads. Getting established as a makeup artist has its ups and downs. Trying to build a business/brand from the ground up takes money, time and space to say the least and I’ve lacked these at some time or another. I started off traveling because I didn’t have the space to take clients, which was pretty time-consuming. I then turned my Living room area into my beauty room and started taking clients out of my home. This became an issue because I felt that I lacked privacy and with kids running around, I didn’t think space was how it should be for clients, relaxing.

I felt that this also played a part with building steady clientele because I didn’t want just everyone at my home. It also takes money because you have to build your makeup kit and quality products aren’t cheap. I would become discouraged at times because of the lack of these things and seeing others fast growth but with my faith, my husband’s constant support and my focus on my own lane, I was able to overcome these things, find a salon to work in and continue to follow my love… my passion.

We’d love to hear more about your work.
