Meet Shawn Armstrong of Metrotechnet in Carrollton

Today we’d like to introduce you to Shawn Armstrong.

Shawn, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
As an IT employee & consultant since 1990, I designed & implemented numerous, innovative solutions which catapulted me from the IT mailroom to the IT boardroom in an incredibly short span. Seeing an opportunity, in 2003, I cultivated my vast network of contacts & formed METROTECHNET to benefit small business owners & entrepreneurs with the world-class expertise & experience I gained from years of working for several Fortune 100 companies.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Initially, I had struggles with learning technology & many times was forced to learn on the job, since training was hard to come by. I guess in a way that was evidence of the faith my managers had in me & fortunately I’ve been blessed with the ability to adapt to changes & learn quickly.

We’d love to hear more about your business.

What were you like growing up?
In 5th grade, my school started an orchestra class. I had no interest in orchestra until I heard joining it meant you could get out of class. So I joined orchestra & learned the violin, playing music from composers like Beethoven, Bach & more. The next year my school started a band class. I wasn’t crazy about the violin so I joined the band as a drummer. Learning music & how to play an instrument was easy; for some reason, it almost always felt instinctive to me. So around the same time, I discovered The Beatles, I decided I wanted to spend my life as a musician.

In my teens, I learned bass, acoustic & electric guitar & how to sing. So I joined a rock band or two. None of them were serious until I entered my 20s when I formed an alternative rock band called “The End”, with Dan Wiktorski, Jeff Johnson & Ryan Hill. The four of us rode the wave of grunge/alternative rock that was popular in the early 90s. We had a lot of fun & I learned a lot but it was difficult to maintain that lifestyle & work for a living at the same time.

After my first son was born in 1998, I decided it was time to focus solely on work. But I am grateful for the time I spent & the lessons learned from being in the music business; much of that knowledge has translated well to what I do today & I still get to play a mean bass at church now & then.
