Today we’d like to introduce you to Shawnessy Ransom.
Shawnessy, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Growing up I was always creative and into the more artistic side of things, but even after going to Art School, I ended up in business. I guess it was the natural progression after being in sales jobs / careers since the age of 16.
I spent many successful years in sales from Software and running a Mortgage company in Texas and Boston, to Advertising Sales in Boston and Fort Worth and worked as a Senior Consultant with Zillow most recently. I always felt like something was missing… no matter how much money I made (and I did very well)… I just felt a lack of passion and enjoyment in my day to day. I sat down with a good friend that runs a very successful online boutique website in Roanoke TX and told her about my internal struggles. She looked at me and said “Shawnessy, you’ve just gotta jump”. So, that’s exactly what I did. I turned in my resignation and jumped into my passion for photography and haven’t looked back.
About 6 years ago I lost my mother to her struggle with addiction. She is where my creative side comes from. She was an amazing artist and beautiful soul that battled her own demons. I find that I am able to connect with the things I loved most about her when I’m in my creative space and that makes me happy. I am able to have positive thoughts of her beauty and creative mind rather than the struggles she endured with her battles in addiction.
I have the most amazing and beautiful clients, they are my favorite part of what I do. Second is the amazing places my photography has taken me. Most recently Iceland, Paris, Italy, Dublin and a few others. I will be in Santorini for a High School Senior Shoot this September.
I try to make every session for my clients and experience that they look back on and smile. To do this, I’m constantly teaching myself new techniques and stretching my creativity further and further. This can be by places in the world we shoot, wardrobe created or props designed and customized for individual sessions / clients.
My personal company motto is:
“There are only three colors, ten digits and twelve notes. It’s what you do with them that’s important
This is a little about my story… It’s really hard to put it all into this box, there is plenty more where this came from.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Absolutely Not!! LOL
I had to teach myself how to use a professional camera. I did not go to school for photography, but I am an artists and if I wanted to get the scenes I see in my mind out of my head and into a portrait, I had to learn the ins and outs of lighting, posing, etc.
Photography is also a very expensive business to start if you want to do it right. Studio space, equipment, lighting, wardrobe, etc. It all comes at a hefty price.
Learning how to price your art. The. Hardest. Thing. EVER!
Creating Value and booking work… none of it is easy, but I love what I do.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Shawnessy Ransom Photography LLC – what should we know?
I’m known for creating moods in portraits and offering unique looks compared to other work. I’m also known for the wardrobe used in many of the photos.
My clients that refer me always tell their friends that working with me is not just a shoot, it’s an experience.
Most recently I started offering underwater Fine Art Portraiture and will be trying to make in name in that as well.
I specialize in Senior Portraits, Bridals, Boudoir, Couples and On location portraits around the Globe as well as Music Artist Portraits for Marketing and Album Art.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
My authenticity. I found that clients enjoy working with someone when they are laid back and completely themselves. Phony never wins in the end.
