Meet Shayla Mackey-Gentry of Clothed in Faith in Arlington

Today we’d like to introduce you to Shayla Mackey-Gentry.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
It wasn’t until I went through a marriage and divorce, that my faith in God started to grow. I was an active church grower for many years but lacked faith. I started to realize that faith is everything! Every decision we make stems from our faith! As I started to grow closer To God, I started to feel him by my side through everything that I went through. Being here alone in Texas with two children, and no family to help, he started to put people in my life and was always making a way out of no way. I started a blog called focusongodtoday. Focus on God became my theme. I didn’t want to go backwards and I wanted to encourage women to strengthen their faith by studying and trusting God’s word. I have always been creative and really into fashion. I decided to branch off and start Clothed in Faith in October of 2017. I share modest fashion, my faith, and life as a mom. I have also branched off into personal styling for women. My mission as I grow is to help other women transform their hearts and wardrobe. If our soul is ugly, So is everything else. Also, sometimes it’s easy to let ourselves go, taking care of kids and spouses. It’s something about getting dressed up that boost a woman’s confidence tremendously. I love helping women feel good about themselves and sharing my faith. We go through a lot as women. I want to inspire women to continue to trust God and don’t be afraid to follow their dreams.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Its definitely been a roller coaster. I don’t consider myself a real social media person. I was pretty private. I haven’t really been active with a social media account since 2010. Now, I’m on there every day. Trying to figure out everything to build a brand is challenging, but also rewarding. I’ve recently decided to focus on my target market and ways to monetize, instead of focusing on the actual growth of my Instagram page. It’s helped a lot. Finding a balance has been a challenge since I’m employed full-time as a Federal investigator. It’s by God’s grace I’m able to maintain everything.

Alright – so let’s talk about your work. Tell us about Clothed in Faith – what should we know?
I am a fashion stylist and blogger. I am known for creating modest, chic, and stylish outfits for myself and other women. When I post, I always like to share a thought-provoking caption. Something encouraging and spiritual for women. What sets me apart is I am a Christian. I’m not vain. This is more than posting pretty clothes. This is about helping women transform inwardly and outwardly. I offer free makeovers as well.

Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
I give credit to God! If it wasn’t for him, I wouldn’t have survived this year. My friends and family have been supportive. My followers are everything. To receive little messages about how I have helped them or inspire them is amazing. My main photographer Esther Cho has been amazing! She has worked with me to make photoshoots affordable and always gets my photos back the same day! She has really spoiled me. She has been God sent! Brandon Allen is another photographer who has been great to work with on special styling projects. He does great work!
