Meet Shelby Miller of Side Chops in Highland Park

Today we’d like to introduce you to Shelby Miller.

Shelby, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
My career path started like it did for many people of my age in my industry: with Star Wars. When the film came out, I was eight years old and amazed. I decided I wanted to become a visual storyteller. Of course, back then I thought I’d be a filmmaker. I got my Bachelor’s from UNT where I found my interest had shifted to documentary films. Once I graduated, though, the realities of a documentary filmmaker’s job prospects became much more apparent.

Luckily, I found a part-time position at West End Post, one of the preeminent television commercial editorial shops in the South at the time and was able to turn that into a full-time job as an Assistant Editor. Over the following years, I learned as much as I could from some of the best editors in Dallas while working my way up, ultimately becoming Senior Editor and Partner of my own production and editorial company.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Honestly, it’s been pretty smooth. I’ve been able to move from one company to another or even from one position to another within a company pretty easily. In this industry, you always have to be learning, improving and challenging yourself and that can be difficult because if those challenges don’t present themselves through client work, you have to find them elsewhere.

That’s when your connections can really pay off. Plus, I really love collaborating with the many talented friends I’ve made over the years.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
Ultimately, we’re storytellers. And with the rise of social media, it’s become more important than ever for businesses to tell their stories. If you really look at your business, you have literally hundreds of stories you can tell to a public who has an insatiable desire to discover and learn about new things.

You can tell the story of how your business came to be, who the founders were, how the product(s) was created, the contributions of your employees, the experiences of your customers, the list is incredibly long. Side Chops can capture and tell those stories in long form web videos, thirty-second television commercials and everything in between.

I’ve been able to combine my love of documentaries with my advertising knowledge to tell honest, powerful stories that can create an emotional connection with consumers.

What were you like growing up?
In grade school, I was able to form tight bonds with a small group of friends in my neighborhood and we spent Summers playing video games, listening to music, shooting Super 8 films and playing in the wooded areas and farms around our houses. We’d be out of the house all day getting into minor mischief.

I also played French Horn in Middle School through High School, so Friday Night Lights and band competitions ruled my world for many years. I was pretty nerdy and introverted. Traits that actually still apply.
