Meet Shelley Rosenfeld of Plants & Planters in Richardson

Today we’d like to introduce you to Shelley Rosenfeld.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Shelley. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I leased a small greenhouse in a shopping center at spring valley and central expressway. I was 24 years old, December, 1978. I had a passion for plants, and I was attending Richland college to learn more… I had $3000 saved. I learned about the plant business on the job. Because my product is perishable, I was never able to leave it. So, basically, the plants taught me, because I couldn’t afford to replace what might get ugly, or get insects, or die. My goal was to get better every year. I expanded to selling decorative containers, as well, along the way. This has become a large part of my business today. In January,1995, I moved to the location I am in today. I have weathered the ups and downs of economy, changes in buying habits, and a different generation of customer. Always listen to what people want, and try to sell the best product, there are too many other places people can shop at. I try to keep an extensive selection, quality products, good service, and fair prices. This industry is constantly evolving. I go to trade shows in Texas, Florida, and elsewhere. It has helped with new products and change.

Has it been a smooth road?
No, I’m a small nursery. In 2003, 4, and 5, my nursery was broken into appx. 18 times, broken windows, large quantities of plants stolen, and eventually high-risk insurance. In 2005, I really wanted to quit, I gave it that year to turn around. I installed surveillance cameras, this helped, but the alarm system was more of a better answer. 2008-2012, economic problems, rainout springs, 2015 and 16. But, this is what you sign up for when you are in business.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Plants &Planters story. Tell us more about the business.
We specialize in plants for indoors and out. We have the most extensive selection of indoor and unusual plants in town. We carry pottery from around the world, eclectic wall art, yard art, unique and common shrubs and perennials. Quality, selection, our presentation of products, and service set us apart.

How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
More people are gardening than ever before, and my industry is moving toward time spent outside.
