Today we’d like to introduce you to Shenequa Miller.
Hi Shenequa, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
My story with SCM Integrity First Companies really started with a dream — literally. Back in 2019, two nights in a row, I had the same dream. I was up in the air with God, looking out over nothing but rooftops. And He said, “These are your homes, and this is your land.” At the time, it didn’t make sense. I had spent my whole career in education. Construction wasn’t even on my radar. But the dream stayed with me, and I couldn’t shake the feeling that God was showing me something I needed to follow.
He didn’t give me instructions or a business plan. He just showed me the end result. That motivated me to strengthen my faith. Once I stepped out on faith, the right people started showing up — city leaders in Gilmer, bankers, community partners, and many others. Doors opened that I couldn’t have opened on my own. That’s when I knew I was walking in the direction God intended.
I was born and raised in Gilmer, and both of my parents were too, so going back there to build felt like coming full circle. I started small, buying lots in one neighborhood and building custom homes for families who needed something affordable, solid and honest. To date, we’ve built 15 homes in Gilmer, and we’re planning at least 20 more. Every home represents stability for a family and growth for the community.
As the company grew, it naturally became a family effort. I brought my daughter and two sons into the business full‑time, and that has been one of the greatest blessings of this journey. Each of them brings something different to the table, and together we’ve built a company grounded in integrity, service, and faith.
Along the way, I’ve been honored with several awards for leadership and community service. One that means a lot to me is becoming the first person in history to receive the Key to the City of Gilmer. The mayor also proclaimed March 1st as Dr. Shenequa C. Miller Day. That recognition is something I hold close because it reflects years of hard work and a commitment to serving others.
From those early days in Gilmer, SCM Integrity First Companies has expanded throughout East Texas and into the DFW area and outside of Houston. Today, we’re based in the DFW metroplex, building custom homes, renovations, and multifamily projects across the region. We’ve grown, but the foundation hasn’t changed: honor God, serve people, and build with integrity.
What started as a dream turned into a calling. That calling became a company. And that company has become a legacy — one built on faith, family, and a true passion for serving others.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. When I started SCM Integrity First Companies, I was stepping into a world I didn’t grow up in, and I had to learn a lot of things the hard way. One of the biggest challenges early on was simply not knowing if I was paying too much for labor, materials, or services. I didn’t have the experience yet to recognize when something wasn’t priced right, and because of that, I lost a lot of money in the beginning. Those losses hurt, but they also turned into lifelong lessons that shaped how I run my business today. I became more intentional, more informed, and more confident in trusting my instincts.
Another challenge was being a woman in a male‑dominated field. Construction is still an industry where you don’t see many women and, especially not running the whole company. There were times when I wasn’t taken seriously, times when people assumed I didn’t know what I was talking about, and times when I had to work twice as hard just to be taken seriously. But I stayed focused, stayed professional, and let my work speak for itself. Over time, people realized I wasn’t going anywhere — and that I knew exactly what I was doing.
Balancing all of that while building a company from the ground up wasn’t easy. There were long days, tough decisions, and moments where I had to remind myself why I started in the first place. But every challenge pushed me to grow. Every setback taught me something. And every obstacle made me stronger as a leader and as a business owner.
So no, the road hasn’t been smooth. But the struggles shaped me, sharpened me, and prepared me for the success we’re experiencing now. And looking back, I wouldn’t trade those lessons for anything.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
In my professional life, I wear a few different hats, but the heart of my work is building — building homes, building people, and building opportunities. I’m the founder and CEO of SCM Integrity First Companies, and we specialize in custom homes, renovations, and multifamily construction. What I’m known for is leading with integrity, keeping my word, and treating every project like it has purpose behind it. I don’t just build structures; I build places where families can grow, feel safe, and create memories.
I’m also a professor of Counseling and Educational Leadership, and 2026 marks my 30th year as an educator. That milestone means a lot to me because education shaped how I lead, how I communicate, and how I support people. Whether I’m in an online learning platform or on a construction site, I’m still teaching, guiding, and helping people grow. My background in education made me a better business owner because it taught me patience, problem‑solving, and how to see potential in people and situations.
I am very proud to be known as a professional in this field and as a true custom home builder. I’ve built everything from tiny homes to a 12,000‑square‑foot mansion. That kind of range is rare, and I don’t take it lightly. Throughout my journey, I’ve met builders who have been in this industry for more than 20 years and still haven’t had some of the opportunities I’ve been blessed with. That’s something I stay humble about. I’m grateful for every door that has opened and every project I’ve been trusted with.
What I’m most proud of professionally is the impact SCM has had on communities. We’ve built 15 homes in Gilmer so far, with at least 20 more planned, and we’ve expanded from East Texas into the DFW area, where we’re now based. Watching families walk into a home they never thought they could have — that’s the kind of moment that reminds me why I do this.
What sets me apart is that I didn’t come into this industry the traditional way. I came in through faith, obedience, and a willingness to learn everything from the ground up. I’m also a woman leading in a male‑dominated field, and I don’t shy away from that. I show up, I do the work, and I let the results speak for themselves. My journey hasn’t been perfect, but it’s been purposeful. And that purpose is what drives everything I do.
So maybe we end on discussing what matters most to you and why?
What matters most to me is living a life of purpose — a life that honors God, serves people, and leaves something meaningful behind. Everything I do, whether it’s building homes, teaching students, or leading my family, comes back to that foundation. I want my work and my character to reflect integrity, compassion, and faith.
My family is at the center of everything. Being a wife to my husband of 34 years, a mother to our four children, and a grandmother — “Nana” — to our two granddaughters is my greatest joy. They are my motivation, my grounding, and the reason I push through challenges. Building a company where my children can work alongside me is something I don’t take for granted. It’s a blessing to create opportunities not just for the community, but for my own family as well.
Legacy is important to me. I want my children and grandchildren to see what faith, hard work, and integrity can build. I want them to know that you can start from anywhere, trust God, and still create something powerful and lasting. My legacy isn’t just the homes I build — it’s the values I live by, the people I pour into, and the example I set for the generations coming behind me.
Community service also matters deeply to me. Even as a young teen, I’ve always had a heart for serving others and stepping into leadership when needed. As an active member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated and Top Ladies of Distinction, Incorporated, I continue to serve in ways that reflect the commitment I’ve always carried. Those organizations give me additional platforms to do the work I’m already passionate about — uplifting communities, mentoring, and making a positive impact wherever I can.
Impact matters. I want to know that the work I’m doing is helping someone — giving a family stability, giving a student confidence, or giving a community hope. Whether I’m online teaching or on a construction site, I want people to walk away better than they came.
And growth matters. After 30 years as an educator, I’ve learned that you never stop evolving. Every challenge, every mistake, every success has shaped me. I want to keep growing, keep learning, and keep walking in the purpose God placed on my life.
Faith, family, legacy, service, integrity, and impact. Those are the things that guide every decision I make and every step I take.
