Meet Sheri Cherokee of Alpha Omega Yoga in Old Lake Highlands

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sheri Cherokee.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Sheri. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I started Yoga when I was 14 because of a gym teacher. He showed me some yoga posters and I thought it is was so cool to be able to contort my body in so many different ways. I also loved the way my body felt after doing the postures, but at that time I was just interested in yoga tricks.

Later on, I meet a yoga teacher that was a great influence on my life. She showed me that yoga was much more than what I could do with my body. That teacher saw potential in me and asked me to sub for her. I had never thought about teaching yoga at that time, but I decided to accept her offer. In those years, there were no yoga certification programs so I just copied her style and that was the beginning of my yoga career. A few years later, I moved to New York and started teaching yoga classes at a gym. I lived there for a year and moved back to Dallas. When I first starting teaching at the gym in New York, there were not very many people taking the class, but after a few months, the room was packed with people so I know I was doing something right.

After I moved back to Dallas, I started to study the deeper aspects of Yoga such as the Eight Limb path, Mahabharata, the Ramayana, and Bhagavad Gita. I started applying the deeper teachings of yoga and this created profound changes in my life.” Information without transformation is a waste of time.”

Eventually, I started studying Ayurveda the sister science of yoga. Ayurveda is the science of life that teaches you how to eat, understand your constitution, and much more.

In 2006, I decided to start yoga teacher training programs through Alpha Omega Yoga, so students could learn and understand the deeper practices of yoga such as pranayama, meditation, postures, daily living, and Ayurveda. Yoga is more than just doing postures. I teach students to be exceedingly more than just an exercise instructor. I run the teacher training programs here in Dallas and in Mexico, which consists of 200 hr. program, 300 and 500 hr. program and Ayurveda life coach program.

I love yoga and it is life changing if you follow the yoga path. Yoga is not a religion it’s a spiritual path. You can find more information at www.alphaomyoga.com

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It hasn’t always been a smooth path. Yoga is an inward journey that helps you to look within. The yoga path is about fighting our internal battles of negative aspects and cultivating the positive aspect of ourselves. We have to be aware at all times of what we are putting into our body and mind, and let go of the things that don’t serve us well. Keeping that awareness means that we have to work on ourselves 24 hours and 7 days a week.

I had to learn not to be so reactive to events that come into my life. Meditation helps me to learn to just witness the events of my life with a calm mind. My mind was very fiery in the past and old habits can be changed with a lot of work.

Running a yoga business can be a challenge with all the different personalities that you encounter in the training programs. I try my best to guide students on their path of yoga that suits their unique personality.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Alpha Omega Yoga – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
My company is Alpha Omega Yoga and I have been in business for 13 years. I run yoga teacher training programs Ayurveda life coach certification, India retreat, and a women’s retreat. I specialize in teaching postures, anatomy, pranayama, meditation, yoga philosophy, Ayurveda, and yogic lifestyle.

I have many students that come through the programs and tell me that their life has changed for the better. To me, this is true happiness.

I am very proud that I can share my 49 years of yoga experience with others and see the changes for the better in their lives.

What sets me apart from others is my experience and that I go deeper into the yogic teachings.

So, what’s next? Any big plans?
My plans for the future is to continue what I am doing now, but always look for ways to improve what I do. I am planning to give more workshops on Ayurveda and yoga for addictions.
