Meet Sheri Griffin of Home Theater Design Group in Addison

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sheri Griffin.

Sheri, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
The business launched from a love for audio that Brad had. As a teenager, he mowed grass to buy his first stereo in Middle school, and eventually, he traded that stereo for his first car. He loved car audio and eventually owned the #3 ranked car in the world (IASCA 1990- 1993). In 1997, when the company he was working for downsized he took the knowledge and passion he had for audio and decided to go into the home theater side of things. He started working for another home theater company and very quickly decided that we could do things better and that dream birthed Home Theater Design Group. From there we started with him working full time and me keeping my full-time job in addition to working with Brad part-time from our home. It was a very typical home based business with a couple of desks in an upstairs bedroom, and our warehouse was in our kitchen. However, here we are 21 years later we are still working our dream, but now it is from an office and warehouse space with a team of some of the top talents in the industry. Every day we start the day trying to do better than we did the day before.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Anyone who has been in business for more than 2 seconds knows that the path is never straight or easy. Early on we struggled with hiring the right team members. We figured if someone wanted to work with us that was good enough. However, after some not so nice circumstances we have a meticulous hiring process now, and we know we have the best of the best on our team. We have also ridden out a few recessions in the economy, the worst in 2008/ 2009 when our business fell to half of its revenue. Fortunately, we run a debt-free company and with some adjustments, we survived while we saw some of our peers unable to make it through. I could go on and on here. There is always something to work on or something to refine to make us a better team and a better company.

Home Theater Design Group – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
We have grown to be one of the most respected whole home integrators in the industry. We are driven by a passion to deliver top technology to each homeowner and to provide them with a system interface that is simple and intuitive. Most importantly, we offer system stability and functionality that can be monitored from anywhere in the world. This is achieved by building a solid network as a foundation on which each system can reside.
We are accredited with the Better Business Bureau of Texas with an A+ rating since its founding in 1997. We are a member in good standing with CEDIA (Custom Electronics Designers and Installers Association) since 1998, and we have received industry-wide recognition throughout the years by our peers and vendors. We have been given the pleasure of being asked to serve as judges on panels for several organizations including the Consumer Electronic Association (CES) and The Professional Audio and Video Retailers Association (PARA). Home Theater Design also continues to be a Power Dealer in good standing with ProSource (formerly Brand Source) since 2004.

Not only do we do work in some of the most elite residences and commercial properties in the Dallas/Fort Worth area, we also have many upscale projects in San Jose del Cabo and Puerto Los Cabos area of Mexico. We have also completed projects in Palm Springs, CA, Washington State, and throughout the southern United States. We work in residences of all sizes up to and exceeding 20,000 SF, along with condo high rise buildings, sports stadiums, and small commercial buildings/corporate offices. We are most proud of the opportunity to get up each day and work with our team to provide the best solution for every client. We go to where the client is and we fit the system to their needs. There is no cookie cutter approach with our team.

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
John Maxwell says “Once you have tasted significance success will never satisfy.” I couldn’t think of a better way to describe what we do and how we feel. Our company provides the systems that people use every day in their homes. We provide security, entertainment and the ability to be connected to the world. This is significant to us that each client has a system that is reliable. I often say the less you have to think about the system we put into your home the better we have done our job. We consider it a huge responsibility to be invited into your home and deliver the best experience possible. That is significant.
