Today we’d like to introduce you to Sherrod Dickson.
Sherrod, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I moved here in 2010 from Atlanta. While in Atlanta I worked for a sign company (The Neon Zone) for 4yrs. I learned the trade and grew to really love it. When I arrived here in Dallas I worked for another sign company (SignzUp) that was totally different from the one in Atlanta as far as the type of signage work being performed. While working with/for these two companies my interest grew about the sign business. At the time the economy wasn’t doing so well so SignzUp decided to fire me (me being the last person hired I’m guessing).
Instead of searching for another job I decided to look at the firing as a blessing in disguise and put my acquired knowledge to work for myself. I landed a few sign installation contracts with a few of the local sign shops (Fast Signs, Signaramas, etc) and began doing installs for them. While working at SignzUp I learned to fabricate channel letter and channel cabinet signs which would play a huge role in my success. I eventually grew and even began to hire SignzUp (the company that fired me) for different jobs from time to time. Now I’m a full-service sign business and living my dream of being an entrepreneur.
Has it been a smooth road?
My journey has been anything but easy. I struggled with generating new business, not having enough help at times and just being new to the whole entrepreneur thing.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Dickson Sign Company – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
Dickson Sign Company is a full-service sign business. We specialize in producing and installing any and all signage from lit channel letter/cabinet signs to car/wall wraps and any other sign you can think of. I’m mostly proud of the VERY humble beginnings and literally starting from nothing to having a thriving business. What sets us apart from the other sign companies is that some companies only print others only produce channel letter signs and we do it all.
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
What I love most about Dallas is the amount of opportunity it is here. Dallas is one of the fastest growing cities in the U.S and with that brings major opportunity. There’s not many things I don’t like about Dallas but if I had to pick it’ll be the amount of homeless people I see on a day to day basis. That has to change.
