Today we’d like to introduce you to Sierra McGee.
Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
I grew up part of a military family in San Antonio and graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of North Texas in photography. I held a job in social media for a bit but found it to be toxic to my happiness. Now I am a photographer for a major pet retailer and get to play with puppies all day.
Please tell us about your art.
Lately I’ve been doing dog portraits. It started because I was in a really dark place in my life. My dog was one thing that kept pulling me through the days, so I wanted to shoot him in a way that was silly but still celebratory. Something that made me happy to look at, and I hope that when people see it, they’re happy too.
What do you think is the biggest challenge facing artists today?
Being true to yourself and your art. Social media is great because it allows for exposure and gives an audience in ways that we’re not possible before. However, in my experience it can breed competition and insecurities. When you’re so focused on being better, doing something different, having higher numbers it’s easy to forget yourself. Being able to forgive yourself for not creating all of the time, and to make work for you and not your followers is freeing.
How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
