Today we’d like to introduce you to Brittney Kennedy.
Brittney, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
It is hard to say where it all began to get me here where I am now if I must say it began at an age as young as birth. My mom loves to tell the story of how I came into this world shortly after the nurse told her she was not dilated enough to start pushing. I guess I said I will show her and just shot out and delivered myself, dangling on the hospital bed with after birth and everything. My mom always gloats about how she did not receive one stitch or any fee for delivery.
Unfortunately or fortunately depending on how you look at it having to go against the grain did not end when I was born and has been the story of my life since that moment of birth. All of my experiences good and bad have contributed to how I became the owner of Signature Tax Solutions, Tropic Freeze, and Co-Founder of The Child Core Foundation. There are three things that my experiences have allowed me to learn to help me where I am today and are the recipe for success. They are Dedication, Independence, and Adaptability.
Graduating from Highschool I had no idea what I wanted to do let alone what college I wanted to go to. I actually dropped out of my first semester of college and my mom made me enroll back in school with her and we got our bachelor’s degree from the same school. Once I graduated with my bachelors I knew I wanted more than what Michigan had to offer me so I moved to Texas with my now-husband. Without knowing anyone here we decided to give Texas our best shot and nine years later we are still here.
While working at American Honda Finance I completed my Master’s Degree in Finance because I like money and love trying to find ways to help people as well as myself improve financial security.
Once I completed my Master’s Degree I begin working in Accounting in which allowed me to work with companies and understand financials and its importance in making financial decisions both short and long term. While the experience was great I still had this deep desire to work for myself and to help smaller companies and individuals in the same magnitude in which I helped medium and large organizations.
In October of 2015, I started Signature Tax Solutions by purchasing an existing tax organization. The 2016 Tax Season I took a leave of absence to run Signature Tax Solutions. After the tax season, I went back to work for a month before I put my notice in because I knew running my own business is where my heart was.
This story is still being written however without the dedication to stay in school despite the unknown I would not be where I am today. As I mentioned I came into this world with someone saying it was not my time and I went against the grain. Unfortunately hearing the word NO did not stop at birth. I have had so many people that told me NO and that told me that won’t work, and that told me not to do something and I did it the way I thought was best.
Without the independence to think act and think freely, I would not have been able to accomplish what others told me I could not have.
Last and not least being adaptable. I never in a million years would have considered or shown interest in Taxes or Accounting but I love what I do. It has allowed me to work with individuals and businesses of various backgrounds. The best part is the satisfaction of helping someone get their books in order, or prepare to purchase a house or to build a budget. I am just following this journey of life to see where it leads me.
Dedication – To be dedicated is to be committed to consistency to the hustle.
Independence – Being able to act and think freely the world is yours don’t let anyone tell you what you cannot do.
Hustle – There is urgency there is a way – Being born, I don’t like to when people tell me something cannot be done or it is not the time, I like to find alternative routes and ways to save money while getting the best quality.
Adaptability – things never go as planned. Plan for the unplanned.
Has it been a smooth road?
Every day is an obstacle, that is why it is important to be adaptable. The hardest part of my journey has been that there is not a blueprint. I did/do not have anyone to show me the way. I do not have a mentor and I am the only Accountant in my family. The only thing that I do have is my instinct, my gut, and some common sense. I just hope that I am able to make a pathway for the younger generations in my community to become Accountants.
