Meet Sindhu Suryadevara

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sindhu Suryadevara.

Hi Sindhu, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I was born in Southern part of India and moved to United States to pursue Master’s in Computer Science. After marriage, I found a DSLR camera of my husband in his luggage, when asked about it, he told he bought it as it was a good deal but never got chance to use it much. And I started using it for fun and slowly understood how to use it properly. I wanted to take good pictures with that camera but did not feel comfortable to shoot outdoors or shoot people, wanted to do something at home in my comfort zone. Then while scrolling through Instagram, found about Food Photography and truly loved the idea and wanted to give it a try. Started shooting food with zero knowledge about the career opportunities it had and it took some time to learn more about photography, upgrade the equipment and finding clients. In this process I took some online courses from experienced Food Photographers and still learning everyday. Now I am freelancing as Food Photographer and have a food blog dedicated to Vegan & Vegetarian Recipes.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Knowledge. Learning photography skills was not just enough. Freelancing involves marketing, budgeting, time management, constant improvements and many more… and I had to deal with all by myself. It took time to find resources about all those and even more time to understand and implement.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a Food Photographer, which means I cook, style and shoot food for food brands, restaurants, cook books and social media. I also have a food blog called ‘THE GUCCHA’ where I share vegan & vegetarian recipes. Most of the time brands reach me out for bright and airy images, just like the ones you see on social media. I also do cooking videos for brands to use on their social media and websites. I am proud and happy about the work I do, especially when I get satisfied feedbacks from my clients. Every photographer has his/her own style and I feel my photography and presentation style keeps me apart from others.

What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
FOOD!! Variety of restaurants here in Dallas is no joke. Almost all cuisines are covered and being from India I love the number of Indian restaurants Dallas has.

I wish Dallas has more farmers market produce with fresh seasonal fruits and veggies. For example, I could not find fresh currants any where in Dallas, which I see other city food photographers use in their work.
