Today we’d like to introduce you to Sylvia Bonniwell.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I started my business because of the children I nannied. I thought it would be a great opportunity to practice my passion for performing and bringing a little joy to children. I have since performed for a variety of events and traveled from Tom Bean Texas to Waco and everywhere in between. I have granted “wishes” for North Texas make a wish foundation on several occasions and through this began to expand my business hiring other performers and purchasing or creating new costumes. I love bringing a smile to kids of all ages and backgrounds. It never gets old seeing how thrilled they are when we arrive.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Getting the LLC started was definitely a challenge. I tend to be spontaneous so I wish I had slowed down a little to research options for funding and filing costs. I’ve been incredibly lucky that I’ve been healthy enough to make it to every event I’ve booked. However, I learned the hard way that booking three events in one day is quite exhausting.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
I think my most requested guest is the Ice Queen. I think that character really resonantes with children and they love to sing along. My company offers visits from popular costumed characters to entertain children at city, company, and private events. Everyone I hire is supremely qualified as both musicians/performers and in their ability to interact with children in a genuine and patient way. Most of my performers are from UNT college of music, with a select few from other colleges or school districts. I am most proud of offering highly believable and stunning performances and professionalism.
What were you like growing up?
I was a very precocious child. Constantly wrangling my little sister and friends into performing my songs, plays and skits. I was obsessed with singing, especially if I had an audience. I could also be quite shy at times but that really increased more in my preteen and teen years. To anyone else who may be experiencing self doubt as a performer, the best advice I can offer is practice your passions and be patient with yourself! If you love what you do, it makes the process and struggles all worthwhile, just embrace the challenge and face it head on.
