Today we’d like to introduce you to Skippa2times.
Skippa2times, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Listening and being inspired by the Dallas All Star Group DSR. If you from Dallas, then you know how much they impacted the city of Dallas from the style of rap, to the clothes we wore. At the time I started rapping, Dallas was on its own wave. Unlike todays rap, no artist sounded like the next. I first started off just freestyling as a hobby with my homies G4 and JayG at Mountain View College parking lot. We would skip classes just to go freestyle in our cars. A few weeks later, JayG pops up and tells us that he purchased studio equipment and that he is dropping out of school to peruse music full time. After that decision, all of our days at Mountain View became shortened. We began spending our days and nights sneaking around JayGs house recording because his Pops had no clue he even dropped out of school. It is one of my home studios until this day and is located still in the heart of Souf Irving. It is called The Root Studios. Shortly after, G4 & I started a rap group together and began to recruit other rappers on the Soufside of our city of Irving. We had plenty of success together on our journey. Fast forward to the present day, I began to branch off doing my solo mixtapes while still being connected to the group. I started a compilation that I called the Celebration Tapes and began to mash. Celebration 1 came, then 2, and here we are to 3 where I have completely mastered my own sound, style, and genre that I self-entitled Stoner Trap Music. A mellow feel over hard trap styled beats. Celebration 3 All-Stars is on all music platforms and features a lot of my homies from Irving and also Dallas rap legend, Tum Tum who is on every Celebration Tape. I’ve been working with Platinum Level producers like CashMoney Ap who has done work with countless industry artists. He Also co-produced a song called “Old Town Road”. Maybe you’ve heard of it. I am also working with KE On the track whose produced hit songs “Swag Surf” and “The Devil is A Lie” by Rick Ross. Staying true to my roots and still staying locked in with the producers I came up and started with, like Wreck Beats and Berry Guap. They still produce til this day. I have also branched out in helping one of my close friends WavyRay by being a brand ambassador for his fresh clothing line Wavii Babii. I have been extending my brand by doing more out of town shows, doing podcast, and also entrance music for my long time homie Mr. Everything Jerome Daniels who is a professional wrestler. The grind never stops. I’m just trying to stay motivated, stay inspired, and stay working on perfection. In the words of my favorite rapper, The Marathon Continues!
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
When you are trying to accomplish something great, there is no such thing as a smooth road. Life is a struggle within itself. It’s a matter of how you respond to it all. The people you consider your “main people” that halfway support you is a struggle for an upcoming artist or even a new business owner. I had to keep mashing and moving forward. I know I can’t waste too much time worrying about what everybody else is doing. The team switches, the wins, and losses, the nonbelievers close to you telling you that you can’t do this and that because THEY feel it’s impossible for you to win. At that point, you have to turn up the pressure and show them who you really are. I had the struggle of finding myself in the booth which took a solid 5-6 yrs of consistency to master. I never wanted to sound like anyone else. My flow My Style My Sound. Stoner Trap Music!
What else should our readers know?
I specialize in being myself and doing my own thing. Not falling into the trend of Auto-Tune rapping/singing by staying true to myself and my craft. The era I grew up in ain’t come from that. I’m proud that I stayed down regardless of people’s opinions. I set myself apart because I refuse to be put in a category. I’m open-minded to rapping on all types of beats.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
I would have made sure everybody around me was pushing towards the same goals and motivating each other on a daily. I would have built a more solid foundation with my music and business as a whole. Everything I went through helped me grow as an artist and person, so I wouldn’t change too much.
