Meet Skylar Johnson of Skylar Jane Creates in Fort Worth

Today we’d like to introduce you to Skylar Johnson.

Skylar, before we jump into specific questions about your art, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
So, I’ve always struggled to find that “something” that made me feel like I had a purpose. I have tried so many hobbies, hoping that one of them would just stick. One day, I saw a pour painting that another artist had done, and it looked really difficult. I pondered it for a while but ultimately decided to try it. Instantly I knew I had found my purpose. It is a very freeing and non-traditional way of practicing art. The way that you have no idea if your piece will turn out amazing or awful is part of the fun. I moved here around nine months ago from Rochester, NY. I also work full time, so that I can afford my living costs, and the costs it takes to run my business. I am what you would call “aspiring” but I am getting there! Things take time, and I hope that my business will continue to grow and flourish.

Has it been a smooth road?
Oh, yes. When it comes to purchasing the best materials for my art, I have to work for it, literally. My dream, of course, is to be able to support myself with income from my business, but I’m not quite there yet. I struggle with some medical issues, Lupus, and depression. Lupus and depression together is pretty much the worst medical combo to have. Some days it is extremely difficult to get out of bed and go to work, but what motivates me to do it is knowing that that money goes toward art supplies and provides artwork to the people that support me. It has been a rough road but I believe it will only get smoother from here.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Skylar Jane Creates story. Tell us more about your art.
So my business is called “Skylar Jane Creates” which is my name. I specialize in fluid artwork. I suppose I am known for all of my work being pleasing to look at. A good blend of colors, shades that compliment each other, and something that causes joy when you see it. I truly believe that each piece I make contains a part of my soul. That’s how it feels, anyway. I am most proud of my journey, and the improvement that I can see in my own art, in just a year’s time. I am constantly trying different methods, using new materials and things like that, to achieve the best possible result. But like I said before, fluid art is very unpredictable! It comes with a LOT of trial and error.

How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
I hope in the next 5-10 years that my business is successful enough that I can focus solely on the business. Right now I have only one day every week to do what I love most, painting. It’s hard, but if it was easy it wouldn’t be worth it!
