Today we’d like to introduce you to Something From Nothing Productions
Hi Something from Nothing, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My name is Kelsie Key, Co-Founder and owner of Something from Nothing Productions, located in the heart of Fort Worth, Texas. Inspired by the ethos “The best way to complain is to make things,” my career has been a testament to transforming challenges into creative opportunities. With over a decade of experience in film, television, and as the former Creative Director and Production Manager for an environmental nonprofit, my diverse skill set has been the catalyst in driving our company’s vision.
The seeds for Something from Nothing Productions were sown during the pandemic on set of Freeform/Hulu’s Cruel Summer, where I met my husband, business partner, and SFN Productions Co-Founder, Brey Browne. Initially collaborating on various projects, our professional relationship evolved into a partnership grounded in shared creative passions and personal resilience. This was particularly evident in our project “Bearcats: We’re Still Here,” a 23-minute documentary that started as a simple idea to film my son’s first year as a starter in pee-wee football but grew into a profound exploration of community and dedication through the eyes of volunteer coaches in a small Texas town. We premiered at the Dallas International Film Festival in April 2024, and just released the full- short film on our YouTube Channel. This film not only marked a significant professional milestone, but also set the cornerstone for our full-time venture into our own production company.
Following the completion of “Bearcats: We’re Still Here,” Brey and I committed fully to our shared dream of storytelling that fosters community. Something from Nothing Productions rapidly evolved into a hub for creativity and innovation, offering comprehensive services in video & film production, post-production, and content creation. Since our launch of SFN Productions in February 2024, we have successfully collaborated with over 50 filmmakers, brands, and organizations, contributing to a range of projects that span commercials to narrative films. Our commitment to authentic storytelling continues.
We are true believers in keeping our productions a positive experience for our crews. We want everyone to feel valued, respected, and encouraged to collaborate!
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It’s never a smooth road for any company starting out. The biggest obstacle by far, is getting the word out that we exist. There are so many various production and creative companies, especially in DFW! We know our expertise, and quick turnarounds are certainly a selling point, and we try to make the experience fun along the way, too!
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
We specialize in bringing compelling stories to life through film and video. Our company excels in a range of services from video and film production to post-production and content creation. We are known for our innovative approach to storytelling, where we blend creative vision with technical expertise to create impactful media.
I am super proud of a lot of our projects, it is hard to pick just one!
What sets us apart is our overall approach to production. We handle all aspects of a project from initial concept to final edits, ensuring a cohesive and seamless narrative. Another differentiator is our personal touch. As a family-operated business, we bring a level of care and dedication to our projects that larger studios may not always be able to offer. This personalized approach, coupled with our professional experience, allows us to produce truly unique content that speaks directly to our audience’s hearts and minds. We pride ourselves on being a bit scrappy when needed, too.
Have you learned any interesting or important lessons due to the Covid-19 Crisis?
Certainly, I think across the board, whether you’re a filmmaker or not, Covid-19 changed things overall. It taught us to be adaptable, and to lean into what we can control versus what we cannot. It also taught me to never take things for granted. I went almost 8 months without work during lockdown, and I missed being on set tremendously during that time!
