Today we’d like to introduce you to Sonja Stelly.
Hi Sonja, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I am a screenwriter, director, and film producer based in the DFW area. I began writing at the age of 10, starting with poetry and short fiction, and quickly developed a passion for visual storytelling—always imagining my stories on the big screen. To bring that vision to life, I produced my first short film, Desperate Chocolate, in 2015, a comedy centered on online dating. The following year, I produced its sequel, Desperate Chocolate – Chanel’s Story.
Since then, I have written multiple screenplays across drama, comedy, and thriller genres. In 2022, I took a creative sabbatical in Mexico to reset and focus on developing stronger, more meaningful stories. In 2025, I produced my first feature film, Somebody’s Watching Me. As of January 2026, the film is in post-production and is slated for release later in 2026.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The journey has not always been easy, but screenwriting and filmmaking are my true passions, making every challenge worthwhile. One of the greatest hurdles has been financing feature films, along with finding the right crew—a process that took time and patience. I now work with a small, dedicated team, and our collaboration has been incredibly strong.
To stay within budget, I took on the role of lead producer, which was both time-consuming and stressful. While our compact crew is exceptionally talented, working with fewer people requires each of us to take on multiple responsibilities. Many independent films operate with crews two or three times our size, which makes me especially proud of what our team has accomplished together.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a screenwriter, director, and film producer who specializes in drama and thriller stories infused with subtle comedic elements. I focus on high-concept narratives that emphasize character development and meaningful arcs, allowing audiences to connect deeply with the characters. What sets me apart is the family-like environment I cultivate on set, creating a space where actors feel comfortable and empowered to deliver their strongest performances. I am especially proud of my first feature film, Somebody’s Watching Me, which brought together a cast and crew with incredible chemistry. This screenplay is a project I truly believe in, and I look forward to sharing it with audiences.
Any big plans?
I plan to continue producing high-concept films that spark conversation long after the first viewing. Additionally, I aim to produce my first stage play within the next two years.
