Meet Branden Smith of Sovereign Jewelry Company in Fort Worth

Today we’d like to introduce you to Branden Smith.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I started my career by going to a two-year trade school TIJT “Texas Institute of Jewelry Technology” in Paris Texas back in 1997. My first job was with Charles Cohen Jewelers in Fort Worth, a Mom & Pop jewelry store that has since closed. Then worked for a more commercial jewelry repair store for three long years, and then ended up working for another Mom & Pop store in Pantego for 14 years until they couldn’t afford to keep me any longer. That life changing event forced me to start the business that my wife and I always wanted, but never had the nerve to start.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I wish I could say that it’s been a smooth road, but unfortunately, it has been rather challenging. My wife and I had just gotten married two months previous to losing my job, and we both had decided that there was no better time than the present to start our own jewelry business. The startup cost on all the equipment is quite a bit, so the first years I worked out of the house on nights and weekends and freelanced for multiple jewelry stores during the day while putting away as much money as we could to buy equipment and open our own store.

Sovereign Jewelry Company – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I have always had a vision of a jewelry store that is much different than the conventional places that everyone is familiar with. We wanted something cool, modern, and rock & roll, but still, has class. Being a custom jeweler for over 20 years now I specialize in all things custom, and also skilled in repair as well. We do not wear business attire because we want our customers to feel comfortable and on the same level. I’d probably have to say we are mostly known for our Custom Bridal Jewelry. I think what sets us apart from every other jewelry store is that we are nothing like any other store and I think the only way to explain that is to see it for yourself, I mean who else has a vintage BMW motorcycle with a sidecar in their showroom?

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
I define success by the level of happiness. Coming to my own place of business every day is so rewarding. I truly love Fort Worth and just want our business to grow, and be a part of everything that is happening here.
