Today we’d like to introduce you to Srikanth Penmetsa.
Hi Srikanth, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
The story of how I became a good photographer started off like any other beginning photojournalists, with a lot of trial and error.
I first started off simply experimenting with different settings and techniques on my camera, honing my ability to capture moments using just the gear I had. As I grew more confident in my abilities, I enrolled in a photography course, where I was introduced to the principles of composition, color theory, and the mechanics of my camera. Using open-source tutorials from YouTube, google, etc. I was able to develop an understanding of the significance of photographic elements and the art of storytelling.
I ventured out into the world in search of new ways to capture stories through my lens. I spent a lot of my time photographing the natural world, exploring the nuances of light, and experimenting with unique compositions. At the same time, I was actively expanding my skills even further by taking on assignments and looking for opportunities to shoot in brand-new environments.
The more places and stories I photographed, the more I honed my ability to capture the perfect moment. As I documented the different aspects of life, I began to recognize what made certain pictures interesting and which ones could serve as powerful visual narratives. I also learned how to make use of my creative tools, such as light, speed, and framing to add emotion to each image.
Eventually, I earned the respect of my peers with the quality of my work, resulting in the opportunity to take part in bigger events, such as weddings and sporting games. I capitalized on these opportunities and slowly built a portfolio of iconic photographs.
At the end of it all, it was my willingness to experiment, explore and challenge myself that ultimately led me to become the photographer I am today.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Being a professional photographer is one of the most difficult and satisfying careers one can have. As a struggling photographer, I have had to overcome many challenges to become successful. I have had to face many financial, technical, and career decisions, but I have done it all in pursuit of my passion and ambition to make it as a professional photographer.
My journey as a photographer has been a long and arduous one, filled with plenty of bumps and bruises along the way. I started my career as an amateur photographer with nothing but an old camera and a passion for creating beautiful images. While I was able to capture amazing photographs, I had no idea how to become a professional photographer or how to market my work.
Fortunately, I was determined and resilient, so I took it upon myself to learn and develop my photography skills by taking classes and practicing. I also invested in proper equipment and attended photography workshops. I was willing to try out different styles and techniques in order to find my true vision and style.
After gaining the knowledge and skills required to create photographs, I needed to learn how to market my work and network with other photographers. I volunteered my services to start-up businesses and non-profits for free in order to gain exposure and build a portfolio. I connected with landscape and travel photographers on social media and submitted my photos to various publishers.
With dedication and hard work, I managed to break into the industry and have now built my photography portfolio with the many different photographic projects that I have done throughout the years. I will continue to take on any assignment or project that I can get in order to develop and refine my craft. Although I still have a long way to go, I feel like I am making progress in my journey as a professional photographer. I’m proud of myself for what I have accomplished so far and can’t wait to see what the future has in store for me.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a professional photographer and cinematographer.
I like to think of myself as an unconventional artist—one who is wildly passionate about capturing the world around me. I combine a unique perspective with bright and vivid colors, turning ordinary photos into unique works of art. I view the world as a palette of fascinating details that I can capture with breathtaking images.
What sets me apart from other photographers is that I’m always pushing the boundaries of traditional photography by using innovative approaches and natural lighting. I’m always experimenting with new resources and techniques to make the most out of my images. Additionally, I enjoy collaborating with clients to create exceptional photographic stories.
I’m most proud of the impact that I have had on my clients, who have used my photos as body art, in advertising campaigns, and for inspiration in design projects. I’m proud of every photograph I take, and I’m thankful for the chance to capture timeless beauty with my camera.
Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
These are the great 2 ways that I found worked best for me.
1. Reach out to local photographers. Connecting with a professional photographer in your local area can be a great way to learn from someone who is experienced in your area. You can usually find them in photography-specific organizations and events, such as photo walks and competitions.
2. Network online. The internet has made it easier than ever to connect with potential mentors near and far. Look for online photo groups and online photography communities where you can ask for advice about specific topics or find a mentor who can provide ongoing guidance.
