Meet Stacey Edewu of Equinox in Highland Park

Today we’d like to introduce you to Stacey Edewu.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Stacey. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Thanks for giving me the opportunity to share!

I’ll start with my parents. They both immigrated here from Nigeria in the late 70s on scholarship to pursue their degrees. I remember asking my Dad to tell me about the first day he landed in the states. He said it was the scariest day of his life. He got off a plane and on to a bus, with not a single soul that looked like him or spoke his language! Literally in the US, no family or friends, just school. Yet, he hustled and worked 3 jobs, while he was in school and received his Bachelors and Master’s degree in Business and Accounting!

So with all the tools to be successful laid out in front of me, how could I have an excuse? Failure is just not an option.

I was born and raised in Laredo, TX around some of the most innovative minds. My high school class consisted of people that were passionate and driven  about what they wanted to do in life. A fun fact about me is that I speak Spanish fluently. I was involved in dance, and sports such as volleyball, and track. Although I was active, I struggled with weight fluctuation all throughout high school, which led me to earn my degree in Exercise & Sports Science at Texas State University. During college, I gained about 20 pounds and was determined to lose it the right way. During my last year, I interned at a functional training gym called Train 4 The Game in Austin, where I started my career as a personal trainer. Surrounded by some of the best in the field, I gained three years of experience, working with all fitness levels and professional athletes. Being in a place where I could constantly learn and have fun was truly a blessing. Fast forward to 2018, I was offered a position on the personal training team here at Equinox in Dallas, Tx. There is an amazing curriculum program incorporated which helps me perfect my craft and help more people.

I’ve always had a passion for music, so teaching cycling classes was the perfect fit to mesh both worlds! I’m not going to lie, I thought it was the craziest idea at first. Then, I reminded myself that this journey was all about pushing myself outside of my comfort zone, so I trained and became an instructor!

I love being creative and playing DJ for 45 min. and push others to their full potential. I started in Austin, and currently teach spin classes with Flywheel in Highland Park!

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Not a smooth road, in terms of making a living off just being a trainer. This came with many ups and downs because I’ve always been a very ambitious person. When I set goals, I try my very best to reach them. In this field, there is SO much to learn about yourself, your environment, and others, before you can help anyone. How can you help others if you can’t reach a goal yourself? There is always a process with everything that you do, and I had to accept that and be patient with mine.

Learning how to budget and work long days was hard, but I could always see the bigger picture because I was surrounded by others with the same struggles and senior trainers that had gone through the same process and succeeded.

Keeping God first throughout this journey, has gotten me through every challenged I’ve faced!

Please tell us more about your work, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
I am a personal trainer/spin instructor/entrepreneur! I am known for being positive, and all things fitness! I am most proud of how far I’ve come with my career, my online training business, and the program I created called Shape Up 30 with my sister brand Winfred Stays Fit. What sets me apart from others is that I’m a hustler 24/7, and I truly find a motivation to keep pushing in all aspects of my life.
