Meet Stacie McCans of Paxton Place Design

Today we’d like to introduce you to Stacie McCans.

Stacie, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I graduated from Texas Tech with a Bachelor of Interior Design and a minor in Art. I won the Outstanding Senior Award the year I graduated. I worked for HKS Architects in Dallas designing primarily hotels. I got married and moved to Fort Worth.

For 15 years, I was Director of Design for a firm in Fort Worth; we focused on high-end residential design. I opened Paxton Place almost 4 years ago. We are a residential and commercial interior design firm. We’ve already won 4 awards since our inception and are currently finalists in two categories for a competition with FW Home Magazine (we find out the results in December).

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Life always has its ups and downs. I have four children and juggling work and a family is always a balancing act. I find my faith and getting quiet/slowing myself down are always key components to getting myself centered.

Learning how to run a business has brought me challenges; however, my husband is a business owner and he has helped me tremendously. I wouldn’t be where I am without his help. I really like working with people and I find if I stay in the solution and focus on how I can serve people to the best of my ability everything works out the way it is supposed to. Patience! Patience, trust, faith and perseverance have served me well.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
Interior Design firm. Commercial and Residential. We don’t specialize in a certain form of design or look…. we love it all. Medical, corporate, hospitality, traditional, contemporary, eclectic/transitional. We focus on the individual and design for them. We will make suggestions of what we think the end result should look like but in the end, it’s their space and should be what makes them happy. If I don’t agree with something I tell them (delicately) three times and then I let it go.

Paxton means peace or place of peace. I intentionally selected that name because I want the process and end result to be light, fun and peaceful. It’s a job for me; however, I really try to keep things as relaxed and enjoyable as possible.

I think we do amazing work. I think we are one of the most service-minded companies around. We enjoy people and helping people.

What were you like growing up?
I was obsessed with design since I can remember. I’ve always been loud, kind, and love to laugh/joke around. I’m very laid back. When my father built me a 5′-0″ dollhouse for my Barbies. All I wanted to do was redecorate, get new furniture, change the wallpaper, etc. I didn’t really care about the dolls.

As I got older, I was always moving my parent’s furniture around, making suggestions, etc. My parents did not have a lot of money but they loved interior design. We were always going to antique auctions and home tours (when available) in River Oaks in Houston. (I grew up near Galveston). My parents hired a male interior designer that would wallpaper our ceilings, walls, etc. He was very ahead of his time.

He was very kind. I drove him nuts because I always had an opinion and shared it. 🙂 I have always received interior design magazine subscriptions (since I was about 12).
