Meet Stacy Sutton of Sutton Health Advocacy

Today we’d like to introduce you to Stacy Sutton.

Hi Stacy, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Since I was a kid, I wanted to be a physical therapist. I just didn’t know I would end up being a pelvic floor physical therapist.

I’ve had my fair share of health issues, including many surgeries and chronic physical pain. I was able to recover and find my way out of chronic pain, which made me want to help others to do the same.

When I was in college, I used to go to this really cool yoga studio run by a retired pelvic floor physical therapist, which made me interested in pelvic floor physical therapy.

Once I graduated from physical therapy school, I went straight into a residency in Women’s Health. For 13 grueling months, I worked a 40 (ha!) hour workweek and also took courses to learn as much as I could about treating pelvic health issues. That time was instrumental and invaluable in getting me where I am today. I learned so much and am so thankful to all the mentors I had who helped me.

I never thought I would open my own practice. But then COVID happened. When COVID hit, I was pregnant, high-risk, and beyond neurotic about getting COVID. I decided to take a break from working in the hospital and do some telehealth on my own. One thing led to the next and now I have my own practice! I love it. I get to work a few days a week and be at home with my son most days. I am so grateful and feel like I have the best of both worlds.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
Looking back on things, it could definitely have been worse! I think the thought of starting my own clinic was much more daunting than actually doing it. Once you actually take that leap and get started, you just do it.

The absolute worst part was creating my own website using WordPress!

Along the road, I’ve tried a lot of things that have not worked out, but that is just a process you have to go through to get where you are. I’m grateful for the things I’ve tried, even if they didn’t work, because they got me to where I am today.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I help ambitious women through pelvic pain, bladder issues, and pre/post-pregnancy problems so they can live an active, confident and healthy life, without medications or surgery.

I am almost obsessive about finding out an answer to peoples’ issues. I have had people come to me and I did not know exactly what was wrong or how to treat it. When this happens, I go on a journey to learn as much as I can so that I can help.

While I help people on their healing journey, I believe that people must heal themselves. My job is to guide them and provide them with the resources they need to accomplish that mission.

As far as my educational background, I went to Trinity University in San Antonio for my undergrad degree and Texas Woman’s University in Houston for my physical therapy degree. I am residency trained through the Baylor Scott and White Institute for Rehabilitation and Texas Woman’s University Residency in Women’s Health and a Board-Certified Women’s Health Clinical Specialist (WCS).

The crisis has affected us all in different ways. How has it affected you and any important lessons or epiphanies you can share with us?
The COVID crisis taught me to slow way, way down. I learned that it is important to prioritize yourself and your family. I also learned that you don’t have to work a 9 to 5 to make ends meet or live a good life.
