Today we’d like to introduce you to Steffon Avery.
Steffon, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Avery’s Savory Popcorn is the brainchild of our Dallas based-Family team, Steffon, Sherry (My Mother), Allen (My Father) and Aleisha (Sister) Avery, we began dreaming of opening a popcorn store in 2010. After studying the local, regional and national market and personally taste testing popcorn at some of the country’s most successful popcorn retailers. We were convinced we could deliver a product that was unique and better tasting than anything else currently available.
My love of popcorn came from my mother in which she got from her Father my grandfather Perry Hinton. Which is why we have Perry’s Favorite (extra Butter) on our menu. When it comes to popcorn I would say we are connoisseurs. Growing up, I can remember only eating bag popcorn a few times because we always popped ours from scratch kernels and oil in an old school popper. Still to this day our Sunday tradition of popping my mom some Perry’s Favorite still lives on.
Has it been a smooth road?
In 2012, we registered Avery’s Savory Popcorn as an LLC. As we were taking the steps to make this dream of our reality, my parents Allen And Sherry Avery stepped away to head up a Non-Profit organization in the south Dallas community to provide adult education. They offered GED and computer classes and students were awarded new computers for there homes upon successfully completing the class. After five years of doing the non-profit in mid-2017, we felt it was time to really bring Avery’s Savory Popcorn alive.

Avery’s Savory Popcorn is a true family business. Our mission statement “Delivering the finest quality flavored popcorn using the highest quality ingredients”. We offer 31 different flavors of gourmet popcorn and over 15 flavors of Avery’s Soda. My Parents Sherry and Allen Avery and also my Grandmother Evelyn Strickland work in the store every day. My sister Aleisha Avery manages all of our social media pages and content you see on the web as she lives in North Carolina.
What do you do?
We make this best Gourmet popcorn in this city of Dallas and worldwide. When you come into Avery’s Savory Popcorn we want to give you an experience that you don’t typically receive in most places nowadays. We offer you a warm greeting as you walk thru our doors as well as we want you to sample our entire menu before you make a purchase that way you know exactly what you are getting. What I’m most proud of as a company is that we were able to do this as a family, yes it took some time to get where we are but we made it. We wanted to have something that we could pass on for generations to come. Also to be able to open a business in your own city and to have the support of family and friends is awesome.
What sets you apart from others?
We donate our excess popcorn to The Stewpot Dallas which is an organization that serves a 1,000 meals per day to our homeless community.
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
I believe Dallas is a good place to start a business because there are so many resources here that will help you get started. If you have an idea or a dream you want to bring to reality, I’m a true believer in the saying “Stay down until you come up” because nothing happens overnight it’s about how hard you work and how dedicated you are to no giving up. We had this dream in 2010 and we were finally able to open our doors nine years later. The process and grind are what makes turning that open sign on every day worth it all.
