Today we’d like to introduce you to Stephanie Lampe.
Stephanie, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Our son was diagnosed with multiple life-threatening food allergies as a baby. Unfortunately, finding a treat that was free of dairy, wheat, egg, soy, peanuts, and tree nuts was next to impossible. For many years, I desperately searched for alternatives that he could take to birthday parties and family gatherings so he would not feel excluded. Occasionally, I would find a cookie or cupcake that was safe, but sadly they were never very good. Feeling hopeless, I started baking for him.
There was an incredible amount of frustration over the years as I spent time and money working on recipes that fell short of my expectations. Finally, several years ago, I created a chocolate chip cookie that my kids loved, but I still wasn’t satisfied. To me, it still tasted like a substitute and not the real deal. I continued tweaking my recipe off and on over the years. This fall, after an afternoon of baking and tweaking and baking and tweaking some more, we couldn’t believe my final product! I started to cry and told my son, “I’m sorry that you’ve never been able to eat a real chocolate chip cookie, but this is exactly how they taste!” We started sharing them with family and friends and everyone thought they were delicious. People could not believe that they were allergen-free. As a mom of children with food allergies, I became passionate about sharing my cookies with people who would not otherwise be able to enjoy a favorite childhood treat. I’ve been busy making my chocolate chip cookies ever since.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has been a tough road. With many years of frustration in the kitchen, I pretty much gave up on baking for my kids. My great intentions and lofty expectations became disappointments rather than delicious treats. It was just too hard, too time-consuming, and too expensive.
Please tell us about Love and Liberty Bakery.
Currently, I make delicious chocolate chip cookies that are free of the top 8 allergens: dairy, egg, wheat, soy, peanut, tree nuts, fish, and shellfish. All my future items will be free of these top 8 allergens as well. I want Love and Liberty to be known as a bakery that provides yummy treats for anyone with food allergies or intolerances. I also want to offer items to the gluten-free or vegan population, as there are limited options for them as well. My tag line is “everyone deserves delicious,” and I wholeheartedly believe that. It doesn’t matter if you’re gluten-free, vegan, or living with food allergies or intolerances; you deserve safe and delicious treats.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
Long, lazy summer days riding bikes, swimming, catching fireflies and just being free to enjoy childhood.
