Meet Stephanie Massegee of Shoemaker & Hardt

Today we’d like to introduce you to Stephanie Massegee

Hi Stephanie, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Growing up my siblings and I saw first hand what it meant to start and grow a small business as my mom built her own home health care company in East Texas over the last 20 years. We always knew we wanted to find an opportunity to build something together and when Shoemaker & Hardt came on the market in early 2024 it was meant to be.

In partnership with my mother, two siblings and their spouses we bring a wide range of different expertise in operations, marketing, retail, finance and food. Not to mention our avid love of great coffee that typically takes us to over 50+ coffee shops a year just for fun! So, we really lean on each other, and it’s been an all hands-on deck kind of approach.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Only six months in and we’re still in thick of it so to speak, but we’ve definitely experienced a few bumps along the way. In the middle of service one weekend, our espresso machine went down which was a nightmare! But we have found the very best partners, and we were able to salvage that day and turn it into one of our biggest days of the year up to that point.

And that’s been the real theme of the past 6 months – taking challenges and turning them into wins or opportunities for growth. And in order to do that, we’ve really leaned on our village – whether that’s our incredible staff or the partners (from our coffee roaster, repair techs, or other downtown merchants) we’ve made or other businesses in the community.

As you know, we’re big fans of Shoemaker & Hardt. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
Shoemaker & Hardt is a coffee and gift shop in the heart of downtown Wylie that originally opened in 1996 as an oddities & antiques shop (many of which you’ll see in the store still today).

Coffee, community and unique finds is our passion today including over 10 local makers and artists that have added to our assortment of art, books, candles, lotions, jewelry, cards and apparel.

We’re just getting started but keep an eye for us on Instagram & Facebook to see more about our pop-ups and new merchandise!

What’s next?
We’re so excited about what 2025 has in store – more events, more local makers and bakers being showcased, and more community involvement! Wylie has been so welcoming to our family and we are thrilled to grow Shoemaker & Hardt while honoring the legacy of the store that means so much to Wylie.
