Meet Stephanie Monzon of Glam X Steph in North Dallas

Today we’d like to introduce you to Stephanie Monzon.

Stephanie, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Makeup became a real hobby towards the end of my high school years, always something I enjoyed and felt I was good at. It wasn’t until maybe two years ago that I found a passion for doing other peoples makeup. It took a lot of self-motivation and encouragement from loved ones to really decide to start the steps of becoming a “MUA.” I wanted to really learn and feel comfortable doing all types of skin types, colors, and styles, so I decided to apply at M.A.C. after a few failed attempts and, surprisingly after a huge help from my boyfriend, I landed the job that would build my confidence as a freelance artist. Working along side great artist and being able to ask questions on techniques and then practicing on myself and applying those techniques to my then my small clientele really motivated me to get this ball rolling.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It definitely has not been a smooth road. The industry is booming and there are so many AMAZING local artists, I would be lying if sometimes I felt lack of motivation. The beauty industry will never stop growing and there will always be a new artist, new techniques and new trends to keep up with, it all depends on your drive. I think my greatest challenge at first was finding a balance between being an artist that values themselves and wanting to gain clientele. My best friend, who is in the Hair Industry taught me that I will have to say no to certain people and eventually the right person would come along that valued my work as much as I did.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Glam X Steph story. Tell us more about the business.
I’m sure I speak for all makeup artist when I say, we do this for our clients. This is a passion, makeup has the ability to give confidence, to change a life, to evoke a smile or even a tear. It empowers women to be confident and stand up and be counted. I believe confidence, makes a person beautiful. I aim to bring out my client’s true beauty, not to necessarily have a whole different person walk out of my chair. I try to provide not only glam but an experience, a personal girl time. I’ve gained amazing friendships from this career, I hope some of my clients can say the same about me. I also try and give my clients tips and tricks along the way, as well as telling them my favorite products or dupes of my favorite products so that they feel they can take what I’ve done and practice it at home to recreate themselves.

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I have been lucky enough to have amazing people in my life who truly support me, from many of my friends who post my work/specials, or my best friend who has always worked at an amazing hair salon promoting me to her clients or my boyfriend who encourages me in every aspect of my makeup career. I have sweet friends in the Nail, Photography, graphic design and even Jewelry Industry showing me support and love, I’m lucky enough to have such amazing/talented friends, I could never thank them enough for believing in me the way that they do. People in this industry are successful from “word of mouth” if it wasn’t for my amazing clients, friends, family cheering me on I might not be where I am today.
