Meet Stephen Austin of Old Man Steve in Richland Hills

Today we’d like to introduce you to Stephen Austin.

Stephen, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I’m from Dallas, I lived most of my life in Dallas went to Woodrow Wilson High School. I lived in NYC in the 1960s. And yes, I’m 80 years old, I worked for the Dallas Summer Musicals in the box office for 16 years. Moved to East Haven Connecticut about six years ago and just moved back to Texas. My sister who lives in Ft. Worth flew to CT and we drove back in my car with two cats to Texas.

I’m Old Man Steve on YouTube and social media. I have a fan base and people follow me on social media. When Vine (an app) was around, I did a video of me eating a peanut butter sandwich and it got over 9 million views. Some people know me as the peanut butter guy. I’ve been on YouTube for 13 years, just doing my thing. Being a retired senior and living alone, my videos gives me a reason to carry on and I enjoy doing them and talking to my fans all over the world. I’ve met a lot of famous people along the way and I’ve done videos talking about them as well as my history living in Dallas. I will be 81 in Sept. and I plan on just doing what I do until I can’t do it anymore.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
As I’ve said, I’ve lived most of my life in Dallas, owned a home in old LakeHighlands for 40 years. My partner and I are together for 47 years and he is from Connecticut. He was diagnosed with Parkinson’s and as the diseases progressed we sold the house and moved to Connecticut so he would be near his family. I, of course, became his caregiver. Had to put him in a nursing home after a time as I could no longer care for him. He passed in 2017. I think it helps me to do my videos as it makes time go by and I don’t feel so alone. Moving back to Texas was hard. I have friends in Houston who did a GofundMe campaign to help raise money and with the help of my sister, I was able to move back to Texas.

Old Man Steve – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
