Today we’d like to introduce you to Summer Zehra
Hi Summer, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Our Story: A Legacy of Nourishment
My journey with Samson’s Kitchen began long before I started simmering our first batch of bone broth. As a daughter raised in Pakistan, New York, and Mississippi, roots came from our deep connections with each other. I watched my mother lovingly prepare panjeeri—a delicious postpartum healing food full of nuts and ghee—for new mothers in our community. This ancient wisdom of nourishing those who nurture became deeply rooted in my own understanding of care and community.
Years later, as a new mother in Chicago, I experienced firsthand the profound need for support during the postpartum period. This led me to found the Mommy League, a grassroots initiative that grew into a vital support system for hundreds of new mothers. We delivered hundreds of meals, offered companionship all across the city, and created a network of care that transcended cultural boundaries.
This cycle of nourishment—from my mother’s kitchen to my work with postpartum mothers—naturally evolved into Samson’s Kitchen. Today, we craft small-batch, halal bone broths using, grass-fed halal bones, time-honored techniques and locally sourced ingredients. Each pot is slowly simmered to extract maximum nutrients, creating a broth rich in collagen and essential minerals—the same nurturing goodness that traditional foods like panjeeri have provided for generations.
As a mother of four, I understand the delicate balance between tradition and modern wellness. Our bone broths honor both, offering busy families a pure, nutrient-dense foundation for health and healing. Every batch we prepare carries forward my mother’s legacy of care, my years of supporting new mothers, and our commitment to nourishing your family as we would our own.
At Samson’s Kitchen, we’re not just making bone broth—we’re continuing a cherished cycle of nourishment, one simmering pot at a time.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
As a Muslim woman entrepreneur, I’ve faced both unique and universal challenges in building Samson’s Kitchen. Sourcing halal-certified ingredients was initially complex – finding suppliers who understand and respect halal requirements while maintaining our quality standards required extensive research and relationship building. We also needed to educate our community about bone broth’s benefits, as the science around collagen, and nutrients is just coming out.
Being a mother of four young children while running a business demands constant balancing. Some days I’m testing recipes at dawn before the kids wake up, or handling business calls during soccer practice. But my children remain my priority – I’ve learned to structure my business around their needs rather than vice versa.
The universal challenges of entrepreneurship have also been present. Self-doubt creeps in, especially in moments when sales slow down or a equipment breaks down and new expenses creep up. Maintaining momentum can be challenging, particularly during quiet periods or when juggling multiple responsibilities. But these obstacles have ultimately strengthened our business, pushing us to innovate and stay committed to providing nourishing, halal bone broth to our community.

What does success mean to you?
Success for Samson’s Kitchen operates on multiple levels. First, it’s about creating a generational impact by involving my children in the business. We named our kitchen “Samsons” because I have 4 sons and I want them to feel ownership and pride in building something together. They help with many tasks: labeling bottles, setting up and serving customers at markets, helping with social media, and witnessing firsthand the value of hard work, quality, and serving others. These experiences plant seeds of entrepreneurship while teaching them about our cultural values and halal business practices.
Beyond our family, success means filling a crucial gap in our Muslim community by providing accessible, high-quality halal bone broth and access to traditional foods like Panjeeri. When customers tell us how our broth and panjeeri helped during their postpartum recovery or supported their health journey, that’s success in action. We’re preserving traditional wellness practices while meeting modern nutritional needs.
Finally, building a sustainable business that supports my family adds another dimension to success. It’s about creating something that’s both profitable and purposeful – a business that honors our values while providing for our future.
