Meet Sun Braden of Beauty by Sun in Southlake

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sun Braden.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Sun. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I never wanted to be a hair stylist. I have an Entrepreneur mentality. My dream was to be a lawyer because I do not like to see good people treated badly. At the time, English was a challenge for me to overcome. The reason I became a hairstylist is because every time I went to get my hair cut, no one could cut my hair correctly to match my type of hair. At one point, I drove three hours away to go to a haircut that was supposedly great for my hair type, and still never got the results I wanted. That’s when I decided, I wanted to go to Cosmetology School and give people what they wanted from a hair stylist.

I went to cosmetology school while raising two boys. I didn’t know a whole lot of English and understanding the material was hard. I stayed up late studying, pulling out my English to Korean dictionary just so I can understand what I was learning. I constantly ran on 3 hours of sleep or less because of how late I would stay up to study. I persevered through it all and achieved my Cosmetologist License.

I started my career with all this fresh knowledge and I still felt I didn’t know enough. Sometimes feeling like I didn’t know what technique to use on all the different kinds of hair. I then decided I needed more knowledge.

I went and worked for Eric Fisher, as his assistant. Eric Fisher is one of the top hair stylist in the nation. He gave me more tools under my belt to become a better hair stylist. Now I felt like I was truly ready to give people the hairstyles they deserve.

In 2009, we moved from Kansas to Texas. It was a big change for my family and I. I started to work for another hair salon and thought everything was going to go well. As it turns out, I actually started to hate going to work day after day. It wasn’t because I didn’t like to cut hair or didn’t have the knowledge. It was the stress of having the salon loading my schedule up with tight time limits before the next client showed up. I felt like I was working an assembly line in a factory. I wanted to have a personal relationship with my clients and not just another head of hair to cut. That’s when I decided that I needed to work for myself so I give my clients the personalized experience that they needed as well as myself.

I opened my own salon in 2010. It was everything that I needed and much much more. I was able to have the personal interactions with everyone thus allow my clients to trust me more as their stylist. I didn’t just give them what they wanted. I gave my clients what they deserved. I now have clients that come from all over the United States and some international clients as well. My schedule is always busy but I wouldn’t have it any other way. All of my clients trust and respect me. I respect and love my clients! My main goal as a hairstylist is to give all of my clients not just beautiful but healthy hair.

“Knowledge is power.” This quote goes a long way for me. All of my clients know that I am constantly learning more to be the best. I now don’t just cut hair anymore. I now do a full fleet of services such as: Specialized Hair Color, Facials, Lash Perm, Tinted Lashes, Tinted Brows, and 3D Microblading.

Has it been a smooth road?
It was not a smooth road to success. I had to overcome a language barrier and I really had to make my clients understand what was best for them to protect their hair and keep it healthy as not all products and services are what’s best for different types of hair.

Another problem I have, is I feel like I don’t know enough, so I’m constantly going to classes and trainings to grow my knowledge. Knowledge in the form of different products, techniques to use, or new ways to style hair.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Beauty by Sun – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
I am the owner/manager/customize hair stylist of Beauty by Sun. My goal with my clients is to give them beautiful and healthy hair. What sets me apart from other stylist is that I’m not looking for a client to come in one time and then I never see them again. I want my clients to keep coming back because they trust me and respect me as their personal hair stylist. The biggest complaint I hear is that you always feel beautiful when you’re in the salon and the stylist styles your hair but after that you don’t know what they did to recreate the same look. That’s why, for each of my client, I customize each color, product, and style; and I show my clients how to style their hair before they leave so they can style their hair every day, and look the same as they did when they left the salon.

I pride myself that I am able to be give each client their own style that allows them to feel beautiful every day. I know with the knowledge I have; their hair will be healthy and beautiful.

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
I like that everyone here is so genuinely nice. Our city is so diverse in culture that we can respect each other as a human being and not based on the color of our skin. With the high diversity of our city, it brings a lot of fashion and style to us and its always changing. I like the challenge of keeping up with the latest trends.
