Meet Susan Curry

Today we’d like to introduce you to Susan Curry.

Susan, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I was born and raised in a small country town in Oklahoma where growing a garden and helping feed the cows at the grandparent’s farm was a common part of daily life. We moved to Oklahoma City in the early 90s and from there I graduated and entered the workforce. For a short time I modeled for a few brands when I was 16 and after working and then beginning to attend college, modeling seemed like a faraway dream and the opportunities in Oklahoma were limited.

I then worked in Insurance and attended college gaining a Bachelor’s and Masters in business when an opportunity presented itself to model at a fashion show and I began to take a new direction in my personal and professional life. I then realized at the age of 35 I was beginning to live a dream and entered into the model realm with fashion shows, cosplay performances, photo-shoots, which then led to e-commerce, fit modeling, publishing opportunities and so much more. I credit my business knowledge in branding and social media expertise in the ability to brand myself and not only create an extension of me online, but also show up and support in person when and where I can in person.

Collaborating and creating opportunities for myself and others is something that keeps me motivated and encouraged. My blog A Liberated Woman helps promote not only fashion but also societal issues and features of Liberation and how others have overcome issues or problems. As I finish my Doctoral degree I have to choose my events and work wisely as time is limited, but I am still scheduling and working as I can including recent promotions with both small and large brands, both paid and unpaid. I also offer business and social media consulting packages but due to time constraints do not actively promote. Being a part of this paradigm shift of plus-size representation has been an amazing journey to be a part of and I am looking forward to where this journey will take myself and women after me. We are entering a realm of greatness!

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Struggles seem to be a constant, and life itself is a roller coaster with ups and downs along the way. It’s funny when I began the Doctoral journey we had to read a text that had us consider the struggles we might face such as breakups and deaths, and as such how we have to remain focused in the journey. At the time I too was in a relationship and never considered how a break up would create barriers within my journey.

When I realized the advice from the text was applicable I chose to remain focused and moved through the struggle, maybe sad at times, but nonetheless, I moved. Struggles also included financial struggles and other personal struggles including death, job issues, and other normal issues I think we all experience. With anxiety and depression prevalent due to childhood traumas I often find myself in dark places, I deal with and combat these issues with positive affirmations and daily reminders of what I am thankful for and nutrition as my natural medicine. I also have a great support system now that I can talk with and get advice on many of my issues or even if I just need to vent. Although issues of life will still come, I am definitely better equipped with these mental tools to deal with the issues.

We’d love to hear more about your work.
I do many things, but my primary focus as a business is my business consulting and social media management. On a personal level, I also offer influencer type work such as promoting a brand or creating a video review among other freelance type work. I specialize in social media as my studies in my dissertation involve how businesses use social media including the successes and failures of what has or has not worked. With my decade of writing experience, I have recently dabbled in copywriting, ghost blogging, and other writing opportunities as my eventual goal is to work completely remote. I am also a signed model locally in Oklahoma with Magna Talent for film opportunities and with Part & Parcel for out of state model casting opportunities.

My most proud moment as a company is seeing that new business owners have success in their start-up and then to see those relationships created become lifetime relationships. Passion and support are at the root of my values and mission to help women create financial independence when and where they can. These roots are what set me apart and keep me grounded in my purpose.

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
My favorite childhood memory is surrounding the holidays when presents seem to stack up halfway to the ceiling, but these memories were some of my favorites as the entire family was present, the food was good, and not to mention the presents again (even if it was just one item wrapped). No matter how small or insignificant the item when it’s wrapped in a present the items are instantly elevated with an emotional attachment. My most favorite memories surrounded the holidays when the family gathered.
