Today we’d like to introduce you to Susan Sigler.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Susan. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I believe learning to swim is as important as learning to read and write. It is not only a very important life skill, it is also an activity people can do their entire life! About eight years ago, I decided to start teaching swim! The decision came from over 13 years of connecting with children and families as a teacher at DKH Academy in Highland Village.
Environment plays a very important part of the learning experience, so I decided to start my business, Hang 10 Swim School and teach in my own private pool. Learning to swim in a private pool helps students of all ages focus and allows them the privacy they may need to get over fears!
It has been an amazing journey! Now, each summer I have over one hundred students I teach between the ages of three to adult! It is so humbling and rewarding to teach swimming and water safety, knowing I have the chance to save a life!
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
My philosophy regarding obstacles and challenges is they are where learning takes place! Every lesson is a challenge because every student is unique, but I enjoy the challenge!
The biggest challenge in learning swim is overcoming fears. Some fears come from a lack of understanding the science behind swimming, other fears come from negative experiences. One year I had an adult student who watched her mother die from drowning. She made it her goal to learn to swim in memory of her mother! It was an honor to work with her and empower her!
Please tell us about Hang 10 Swim School.
I am the owner, operator and sole instructor of Hang 10 Swim School! I think the Greater Lewisville community would say that I am known for teaching quality swim lessons using techniques specifically for the needs of the student.
“Hang 10” is a typically a surfing term for a trick where feet hang over the edge of the surf board, but I named my company “Hang 10” because I envisioned ten toes standing at the edge of the pool. Some of those toes are standing, waiting with excitement, while others are full of fear!
My company is Hang 10 Swim School, specializing in private swim instruction.
I am most proud of the relationship I build with my students and families! I work to build a relationship of trust! I want fearful students to know they can trust me to support them through their fears while challenging them to try new things. More advanced students can trust me to challenge them and prepare them to make safe decisions in and around water.
I believe my philosophy and my methods set me apart because I explain the science behind swimming and then demonstrate to my students. It is not my goal to see how many lessons I can teach, but that I teach high quality lessons.
When I teach lessons to children, I require parents to stay pool-side. The benefit to this is it helps them see how their student is doing with every skill. They learn from my safety lessons and they learn my methods of teaching so they can continue the lesson when they take their child swimming. Many times parents tell me they were able to improve their own swimming because they observed their child! I love knowing the parent feels empowered!
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
If I had to start over, I would seriously do everything exactly the same way! With the support of my husband, Steve, we have worked to make every aspect of the company function in an efficient way with the highest quality of teaching in mind! I am proud of the business we built and having the ability to make an impact on people in my community!
