Today we’d like to introduce you to Susan Stageman.
Susan, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I moved to Texas in 1985 after a 10 year corporate career in New Jersey. I wanted to do something more creative when I moved south so I started an art and decorating business with a network marketing company. I didn’t make much money even though I worked 80 hours a week. I was lacking in sales skills, communication skills and critical thinking skills. Even though the company provided training, it wasn’t the training I needed. it was the thinking inside my head that needed to change. I was also going through a divorce. A friend of mine recommended a class in Neurolinguistic Programming (NLP). I’d never heard of it but then my idea of change was to change jobs, careers, locations, husbands….
In 1988, I walked into my first NLP class. It changed my life. It changed how I looked at communication and people. It changed how I made changes effectively. It is almost 30 years since I taught my first class. The most important element of change is being able to see things from a different perspective, a hallmark of NLP. Sharing ideas to help people live a happier, more productive life is the hallmark of purpose. Success in life is based on your ability to communicate. Those people that seem to make it happen magically are doing things that most people aren’t doing in their communication strategies, their beliefs, and how they think and behave. NLP is so important to business that in the last 10 years, elements of NLP have been in every business training. Learn the entire system of understanding human beings so complete that you will wonder how you got along without it.
Has it been a smooth road?
No, it hasn’t been easy and there were many struggles and challenges.
- I had to look at myself in a critical way to understand how my thinking was creating my experiences and situations.
- I had many times when I didn’t know when my next meal was coming from.
- In the early days, I had to constantly be prospecting. Even after 30 years I have to prospect. I expected that at some point the business would run by reputation which it doesn’t.
- I’ve had to update and learn new ways of doing things to keep current with technology.
- Early on, I had trouble collecting money because I let people take classes who were not ready and didn’t have the money.
- I had to demonstrate what I teach. Not always easy since we are all human beings. Yet I had to accept that I wasn’t perfect.
- There are cycles in everyone’s life and learn to roll with them.
- Accept help. I learned to accept help from people instead of trying to do it by myself.
- I had to learn boundaries with money and with my personal life.
- I had to keep what I taught fresh not only for my students but also for myself.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the NLP Training Concepts story. Tell us more about the business.
The business person’s choice to communication and NLP skills. I teach application of NLP to real life situations.
There are many places you can take NLP and many people from which you can take NLP. Not all NLP is created equally. There are programs that hide NLP under different labels or are taught by people who are not qualified or people who have very little training in it themselves. When purchasing training or coaching make certain that you know what you are buying. I have 30 years of experience successfully guiding students in small groups to achieve their most lofty goals. Skills are reproducible, usable and easy to learn. I teach NLP with integrity and as a system of understanding people. As a system, you are not learning a technique for this or that. You are learning a holistic approach to communicate and change.

I am a member of the Leadership Summit, a global organization for elite NLP Trainers who teach NLP the way it was intended, as a system of communication and change, as a system for understanding human beings.
My reputation is global. My training is the most comprehensive in the U.S. I keep my classes sizes small to provide personal guidance and individual value.
How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
The future of NLP is uncertain. I think it will continue to be taught. It has become a commodity with no standards other than a few standard-driven groups in Europe. Much of NLP has been broken apart and taught in bits and pieces. Originally it was taught as a Unified Field Theory of communication and language – critical thinking skills. I’m one of the few U.S. based companies that still teach it as a system. In Europe NLP is more accepted on an academic level than the U.S. There is a big trend in developing research that supports it as a model. I’ve never found it lacking for results. I think results speak for themselves. My clients agree. None of them wanted research, they wanted results. I’m finding younger people (Millennials) are gravitating to it. NLP will always be a part of the group of people who seek to understand and to change their world by changing themselves.
