Meet Tai Mason

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tai Mason.

Tai, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I started playing around makeup when I was around twelve years old. I would watch my mom, who is also a makeup artist, slay her face daily! I remember the very day I decided I wanted to get more into makeup. I was assisting my mom in doing makeup for a bride on her big day. I helped my mom clean brushes in between clients and saw how effortlessly she glided those brushes on the bride’s face. She literally enhanced the beauty that was already there. It was amazing to watch. She even slid me a little money for helping her out that day. I went to school for fashion design/ marketing and business management. There I learned to design clothing, branding and running a business. I just knew I was going to have a boutique with exclusive pieces you couldn’t find anywhere else. That definitely didn’t happen. My passion took a turn. I began with taking models and perfecting my craft. I even applied to MAC a couple of times.

At one point, I even got as far as the group audition. They would never hire me, and I couldn’t understand why, but I never gave up. Although it was extremely discouraging, not being hired by a big company like them, I continued to perfect my craft and build my clientele. Now, my name is being tagged in multiple statuses from women looking for an artist. People recognize me as “the Tai B. makeup artist” I have a YouTube channel that I’m growing, an Instagram audience I am trying to grow as well and something in the works for the fall of 2020! I am also getting interviews like this for magazines, which I squealed like a mouse when I got the email from the editorial staff. I am definitely still growing and learning new things. My next venture is to get my esthetics license, which I feel is very important to my journey and business. I am on my way. I wouldn’t keep going if I didn’t believe that.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
No! Absolutely not. In fact, it’s been a rather bumpy road. Growing an audience while growing in a huge industry definitely has its days. Learning to deal with difficult clients, putting policies in place, making sure you are professional in every aspect, all while raising now TWO boys… it’s definitely not for the faint of heart. I am learning and growing every single day.

We’d love to hear more about your art.
I am the senior makeup artist at Tai B. Beauty. I say senior because I plan to turn this into an empire of artists that work under me. I plan to have a team. I specialize in makeup application, whether natural, bridal glam, glitter and colorful looks, I will get the job done. I’m known for my artistry. I don’t take the traditional approach to makeup. I love to venture out and make people pay attention to my work. I’m not everyone’s cup of tea and that’s okay. Lately, I’ve been getting a lot of brides in my chair, something I hope to expand into an additional brand within Tai B. Beauty. I’m most proud of my work. Some days I look at my work and my client is in love with it and I am hard on myself, telling myself I can do better.

But, some days I see my work and I’m like, “okay, girl!” I’m very proud of my growth. I believe what sets me apart is the work and studying I’ve done, the knowledge I have when it comes to makeup. I worked for at Sephora for about a year and a half and within that time there, I learned so much. We had to eat, sleep and breathe the color wheel, we had to have lots and lots of product knowledge. I know so much about the products and how they work. I believe my knowledge sets me apart.

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
I would have gone to school for esthetics first. I would also have, learned the business and branding better. It’s all a process.

The venom painting I did on myself was inspired by a few artists I’ve seen on social media. Like most makeup looks, this one was a must do for me. Abby Artistry and Latoya Taylor.
