Today we’d like to introduce you to Takura Makwembere.
Takura, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
During my grade school years, I’d always admire movie stars, models, icons, basically anyone that seemed to be splashed all over the media. They all seemed to be exuding a beautiful sense of confidence because they looked good. I knew that one day I’d love to bring that sense of happiness, confidence and beauty to anyone that would let me.
As I grew to love the eyeshadows, the blushes, the highlighters, the foundations, etc., the creative side of me couldn’t continue to sit on the sidelines anymore. If you had to ask any of my friends and family they would tell you that I am a DIY queen. I see the beauty in all things around me and aspire to have people see that in themselves from that lens. If you see me out there and ask who did my hair, makeup and nails, most likely I did. I improved my skills by consistently practicing on myself, friends and my number one volunteer, my ever-supportive twin. Thanks love!
Before I knew it, brides, a few celebrities here and there were seeking my fabulous brush skills. It was then that I realized that I needed to do more than just use other people’s products. There simply was no reason why I couldn’t use my skills to advertise my own tried, tested and approved products. This is simply how KURA Cosmetics was born. KURA Cosmetics is me sharing my vision of beauty with the world by introducing lashes and pigments. I began with these because they connect to my childhood, where I noticed how small things like lashes and a pop of color can enhance one’s looks and give that extra oomph that one needs to transform from their every day look to a goddess or queen so to speak. I want to make sure that everyone has the ability to be and look their best, which is what I admired when I saw the models, Icons, actors and actresses.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
We are constantly looking for ways to make sure that our products stay relevant to the times. The quarantines going on throughout the country and world because of the COVID-19 outbreaks have slowed things down a bit, but we are glad that our product appropriately works for the times, as there is less of a chance for contaminating your products. This means they definitely will last longer. This is wonderful for makeup artists that use their products on multiple people. Our products are packed into a bottle that allows you to dispense them onto a clean surface before applying them on, which eliminates the step of swishing makeup brushes directly onto the product to procure it. We hope to keep pushing the idea of a product that is easy to share without cross-contamination between clients. This is needed on the market more than ever.

We are known for our unmatched makeup skills and the use of our beautiful, fluffy and soft luxury lashes and silky smooth pigments. Our pigments are basically a loose eyeshadow that is initially dispensed on to a surface before use. This prevents you from contaminating your products by double dipping into a palette for example. This helps your product to last longer. A little bit/dash definitely goes a long way. Makeup Artists really love our products for this reason as well. Our Luxury lashes are designed to be used multiple times. They can be worn up to 20 times depending on how you care for them. They come in a hard case that allows you to safely take them everywhere, for example in your purse, or simply store them in the case, anywhere. The case also helps to maintain their shape. It is important to note that KURA Cosmetics Cruelty-free and are not tested on animals.
What were you like growing up?
As a child, I was always happy. I was very observant which helped develop this DIY queen that I later morphed into. This is coming in handy in many areas of my life. I have always been an artistic perfectionist. I’d carefully watch hair braiders. Older cousins do their makeup, watch my mother paint and create masterpieces for her classroom, the list is endless. I was drawn to anything that involved me using my hands. I would, therefore, be compelled to teach myself how to do all of these things until each and every craft was mastered. So I am proud to call myself a pletherer of things like an Artist, a makeup artist and a hair braider.
