Today we’d like to introduce you to Tamara Doyle.
Tamara, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
From a young age, I was very fascinated with cosmetics. I use to watch my grandmother go through her makeup routine in awe and daydream of when I would be old enough to wear makeup. As a teenager, I was introduced to to the wonderful world prestige brands, and from there, I didn’t look back. I was always doing makeup for someone else or myself! Completely obsessed is the best way to describe their feelings. In 2016, I started freelancing for a prestige brand of cosmetics and my experience doing that was such a positive part of my life, I knew that makeup would be what I spent the rest of my life doing. The freelance community is awesome and every artist is passionate about what they do – Just like me!
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
While I am blessed beyond measure, it has not always been an easy road. I am currently completing my second try at cosmetology school, and I will be finished very soon! The first time I enrolled, 4 months into school my tools were all stolen out of my car. I was a single mother who could not afford to replace thousands of dollars in tools. I had to drop out because I didn’t have the tools I needed and it was back to working somewhere I felt trapped. I’ve had to give up freelance jobs that I loved in the past because the hours conflicted with my full-time job. Nothing is more heartbreaking than giving up with something you are passionate about to stare at a screen for 8 hours a day. Life is about knowing what and when to sacrifice. More than a few times that sacrifice has been advancing my cosmetic career, but I have never given up on my craft. I very strongly believe that the obstacles in my life were preparing me for success. Giving up on what I am passionate about has never been an option, and setbacks are only a lesson in patience. I am now finally In a place where I can go after what I want fearlessly, and I have an amazing support system. It feels great!
Glam By Tamara – what should we know? What do you do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I am a professional makeup artist. I have been in the cosmetic industry for a few years but I have been working on my craft for over ten years. I work in special occasion makeup and I love being such an important part of those big days for my Clients. In February, I placed in the Avant-garde category at “Rivalry”, a student competition some of the Paul Mitchell schools compete in. I’d like to think I’m well versed with my brushes and I’m always continuing my education, I just took a class with Debra Dietrich! I would say I’m well known for my cosmetic library and my high standards when it comes to sanitation and beauty products. My makeup collection is expansive! I need to be able to service my clients with any type of look. From a natural look to the deepest Smokey eye, it’s important to me that I can accommodate any request. It’s also important to me that those products be of quality, my clients know my standards and expect that. I believe that’s what sets me apart. You technically don’t need a license to do makeup, however, I am still in school to get my cosmetology license because I want my clients to know that I am serious about what I do. I invest in my craft, It’s not just a hobby. I provide a luxury service to my clients and for that to be what it is, corners cannot be cut. Sanitation is a top priority, when you work so closely with people, education on the skin, health, and sanitation are very important. I am proud that my clients can always trust the tools and products I use on their skin.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
I think success can be measured in happiness. It’s not about money or social status for me. You have to ask yourself, How happy are you doing what you do for a living? Are you happy with the service you provide? Is your clientele happy? I think that if you’re constantly growing as a person, as an artist, then the answer to those questions should be yes and I think that’s what matters. Everything else will come if you work hard.
