Today we’d like to introduce you to Tami Winn.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
At the age of 16, I started my first job in a flower shop where I learned the elements of design. When I was 19, I was the manager for a large local chain flower shop which is when I started planning events. At 23 I started my company running it out of a detached car garage at my parent’s home. The space was tiny but I made it work! The next move was to a larger warehouse space that had an office and a space for our designs and cooler. I shared this warehouse with my dad and his company. The designer that had worked for me at the previous flower shop came on board to help with the design of flowers as well as one of my best friends that I had met when we both started in our first shop at 16. In the first full year in business, I had 54 events. Things were growing so quickly and I soon took on another employee who helped me plan events.
In 2009, we moved our location to Fort Worth. This is when things really took off for us! I hired another planner, Jamie Lemke, to help me with all of the events. She also takes on her own weddings as well. We have been in our current design location since that time. In January of 2017, I opened a 2nd location that is office space only. It’s in a historic district and is close to 7 other wedding businesses in Fort Worth.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
We are often compared to Jennifer Lopez in the movie The Wedding Planner. People think the life of an event planner is all champagne and luxury. There are many perks to our job, but the reality is that its countless hours, blood, sweat and tears. The main struggle is finding a balance between family and work. I’m a wife, mom to 2 amazing daughters and very close to my family. I’ve had to realize that there are times to work and times to be present with my family. I’m so fortunate that my clients are completely understanding of this!
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Tami Winn Events – what should we know?
I am an event planner, designer and a florist and I specialize in luxury events. I feel I am well known for the design of and transforming a space into whatever the client dreams it to be. I am obsessed with details and making them personal to the client! I am so proud of the reputation we have set for ourselves and the standards we hold ourselves to. We have one shot to make an event perfect for someone and we don’t take that lightly.
Not only do we offer full planning and design, but my associate Jamie also provides clients with the option of partial planning or month of coordination.
On average, we do about 100 events a year ranging from weddings, corporate events and social parties.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
I like to laugh- have fun. It’s so important! Planning an event can be stressful, but we take those parts in stride. The rest of the time should be enjoyable. I really take the time to get to know my clients. By the time their wedding gets here, I may be more excited than anyone and I feel like they can see that. My clients know that I am absolutely, 100% invested and strive for perfection and I think that is part of our continued success.
I think that people would describe me as a lover of life. I live on coffee, wine and good music! I love to travel and spend time with my family. My husband coaches our daughters in their sports and I am what you might call a legit soccer mom!
