Today we’d like to introduce you to Tamisha Brewer.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Tamisha. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I have always had a love for candles! I ask for them as gifts on my birthday and Christmas. Along with me, love for candles, I have always had a love for God. Like many black children, I grew up in the church. Sunday school, choir practice, Easter programs. You name it. I’ve been apart of it. So God was always about my life. As life goes, like many children who grew up in the church, we sometimes stray away. Trying to find our paths, but we always find our way back to our roots. May 2018, hands down has been the worst month of my life. I lost my father on May 13, 2018, which was my parent’s wedding anniversary and three days after my mother and my birthday. That day forever altered my life. But one thing I always admired about my dad was his love for God. Even in his final days and hours, he did nothing but praise him. As I look back on those days, the comfort he had was astonishing to me. So as I started my grieving process, I wanted to feel that comfort my dad always had in his relationship with God. So I start back reading and listening to my bible and I being to feel that comfort that I had all those years ago as a child.
Now internship has always been in my blood and I realize a few years ago that I did not want to work for other people. I just knew that was not why God put me on this earth. I had two businesses before starting Walk By Faith Candles, but they weren’t my passion. I was honestly only in it for the money and nothing else. Now I have always been super creative and love making things with my hands, so I wanted a business where I could express myself. Such a boom! Candles came to mind because I already enjoyed them plus I could be creative while making them. I did months of research, like literally six months worth. Shout out to Stanley Handmade on YouTube, his videos were so helpful and taught me everything I know!
I really took my time because I didn’t want to half-ass this and I wanted it to be close to perfect as I could get. I moved in silent the whole time, that’s just how I am like I didn’t tell my mother and I live with her! I did that because I didn’t want anyone telling me I couldn’t do this or it was a bad idea, especially after starting to other businesses that didn’t last but a few months. So I started Walk By Faith Candles Co. in Nov. 2019 with a $200 order so I could make candles to give to my friends and family for Christmas that year. Once I poured my first candle, it was a wrap! I could feel myself walking in my purpose and it felt amazing. I created a saying that I tell anyone who wants to start a business, “If your not willing to do it for free, then you don’t want to do it.” Because when you are walking in your purpose and using the gifts God gave you, you really could care less about the money. People will see that and that’s the reason they click the add to cart button and purchase because they know you are doing what you do out of love.
Now every candle in my line comes with a handpicked scripture! (Thanks, Google!) I wanted to explore the bible and I wanted to give my customers that same feeling of seeing a scripture they have never hear of and opening there bibles to read it and explore the path it takes them on. I want my candles to bring people back to God, closer to Him, or introduce Him to them. One of the other things I’m big on is all natural products, which is why my candles are 100% soy wax. Along with 100% vegan wood wicks, I also made sure that everything is soured in the US. I felt that it was important that I support and help sustain jobs here in the US.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Money is my biggest struggle. But that goes with anyone who is starting a product based business because to have to buy so many things at a higher rate because you haven’t reached the point where you can buy in bulk for cheap. I work a full-time job along with being a mom and college student, so I put every hard earn dollar into my business. I also try, I do, to only purchase the US-made products which are naturally more pricey than going overseas. Another obstacle is getting seen. When you are a new business, you are the marketing team, along with everything else. So I have had to get creative with getting myself out there. I will say that face to face and word of mouth has help me grow so much. Along with social media, Instagram being my main outlet. I’m on there everyday posting and interacting.

All of our products are the USA made! From the glass vessels to the 100% Vegan Wood Wicks. We also use 100% Soy Wax made from American grown soybeans! We prided ourselves on being able to create natural products that you will love in your home! Here at Walk By Faith Candles Co., Ever one of our hand-poured + soy wax candles comes with a hand picked scripture that will guide you as you walk your journey with God.
From some of the research I did, I didn’t see a lot of faith based candle companies, and the ones I did see didn’t put any love into it. I was slapping a sticker on a ready made candle. There was no thought behind it. So I knew there was a need for my candles. Now my candles have a very clean and modern look to them. I wanted a luxury candle look with a down-home feel. Which for my area of Texas period isn’t common. This is the land of rustic! But again, I knew people were looking for a faith-based candle line that had a modern feel and didn’t look like something for their grandma’s house, no offense to grandma.
Now along with my line, I do offer custom orders, wholesale and private label. I love helping others and being creative, so these services allow me to fulfill both.
Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
All credit goes to God, first and foremost. I will say my biggest supporter has been my Mom and my friend and classmate Kim. Mom has been such tremendous support, and a lot of times, I don’t even know but I appreciate it so much. My classmate Kim has been so amazing because I can bounce ideas off to her and she always keeps it real.
