Today we’d like to introduce you to Tammy Salter.
Tammy, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
My history starts as 21 years with Kmart in big box retail as a store manager, and 15 years with Office Depot as a store manager lastly.
I have spent my whole life in retail and customer service, it is my passion. I have always worked for someone else and had to follow their theory of “customer” service. At the midpoint of my career only 15 years away from my corporate retirement and a steady weekly salary, I had decided I had had enough of doing it their way. In past years with the pressure of on line purchases stores have suffered tremendously with their sales, and their way to manage that was to cut payroll. As the salary member of management in my store, the only way to manage that was to cut other managers and work yourself. My family life suffered and the only thing I did was work.
You know those quotes you read “do what you love you’ll never work a day in your life” and “Go after your dream, you’ll never know unless you try” well that’s what I had going in my head over and over again. I am not a dice roller, but I had a higher calling. So I rolled all my retirement into this business. I had loved the Copy and Print area of Office Depot, and the ability to have one on one relationships with people and make a difference in their business or general activities in their life. So when I talked to my partner of 17 years (she’s the dice roller) we were on our way.
We opened in December 2016 with no business, and slowly through our customer service and networking the community and business we have made a name for us, as in this area no one really knew what PostNet was.
It’s been tough and uncertain at times, but I don’t think I could work for anyone else again. My store, my customers, we take care of them
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has had ups and downs, most as in any business are the financial challenges. The first months are not business or small amount but you still have payroll, rent, and machines etc. to pay every month. You rely on credit cards sometimes and that’s scary. I wouldn’t change it now.
We have a reputation we have built for community service and customer service. With owning my own business I am able to work my business and volunteer in the community. I am active in my city and participate in 6 Stones a faith based organization.
I would have never been able to do that in the corporate world.
Please tell us about PostNet.
I guess we are known for customer service, our integrity in dealing with jobs. We are also known for not saying “no”, if we can’t do it I find a partner who can. The customer just wants to be taken care of, when you say you don’t do that and don’t offer an alternative, you really aren’t a source.
We a total printing, shipping and design store. We have a retail location, but we handle a lot of our customers through email and phone communication. We strive for being the first one you get a quote when you need it, and the one who can deliver when you are in a crunch. Most people always need it “yesterday”.
From a huge banner to die cut for window on your car, to just printing and design we do it. We also offer all shippers for shipping and drop off. Plus a notary service, faxing etc.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
My dad used to have me work in this convenience store, he also only did retail. When I was about 5 I would go in and help him sometimes. He would put the old Pepsi crates (wooden used to collect bottles in) and stack them up so I could reach the register. He taught me how to treat people who came to the store and how to count money back. I didn’t know then how invaluable that lesson would be.
