Meet Tanya Mac

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tanya Mac.

Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
My passion for art began at a very young age. As a child I was surrounded by creative people who inspired my interest. After many years of pencil & ink sketch art, I began to experiment in various mediums. This forced me to step outside of my comfort zone, expanding my creative imagination. There was an obvious freedom and personal expression with this new style and it was then that I really began to find my niche. I was excited and interested in the effects of color and the emotions it pulled from within. The texture and splatter of the paint & ink tell a story that allow people to interpret my work for themselves. Since working in the Veteran community in my full-time job it has broadened my artistic range into creating patriotic and historic art pieces. I have been privileged to present artwork to various military organizations and to some of the country’s greatest war-fighters.

Please tell us about your art.
I typically paint with acrylics and ink creating mixed media art. Some of my original pieces provoke various emotions from viewer to viewer. I’ve created collage like playful pieces as well as pop culture, and patriotic themes. Today, my work is a bold mix of styles. I range from street to contemporary art. I use clean, silhouettes, and weathered looks to go with my pop and patriotic themes. I am inspired by music, children, and life in general.

I hope when people view my art, it sparks emotion from within and motivates them in a positive way. I get the most out of being able to give back to communities that have already given so much. I often have the honor or leading Veteran, first responders, and their families in expressive therapeutic art classes. Without their bravery and sacrifice I would not live in a free country where I am able to artistically express myself. If there was one thing I would like people to know about my artwork it would be that there isn’t always a plan behind it. Sometimes what you see on the canvas is pure emotion from within.

Given everything that is going on in the world today, do you think the role of artists has changed? How do local, national or international events and issues affect your art?
I can’t speak for other artists, but I do know that current events sometimes inspire me to create relative artwork based on the situation. I do not think the role of artists has changed. Artists historically create art for a multitude of reasons. Making art for fun and adventure; building bridges between themselves and the rest of humanity; reuniting and recording fragments of thought, feeling, and memory; and saying things that they can’t express in any other way. I can relate to all of those things in certain times of my life creating, and I believe future artists will also feel the same.
