Meet Tayla Adjei-Baah of Exceeding Education

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tayla Adjei-Baah.

Hi Tayla, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Exceeding Education was founded by my partner and I at the wake of the Covid Pandemic. Before this, we both had years of teaching experience. Ashley was in the Private school sector, and I was working as a mobile homeschool teacher as well as providing private tutoring services. When the pandemic began, we saw the need to implement a service that catered to the children who were not able to attend school due to nationwide covid restrictions. Although many parents began working remotely, they were still unable to do so due to the responsibility of making sure their children still completed virtual school. Ashley and I thought it would be a great idea to offer a homeschool environment, that offered the appeal of a personal tutoring session all while staying safe and social distancing. We Officially launched our services by offering small Homeschool Pods of 5 kids or less, as well as supplemental tutoring sessions. Since then, things began to take off. Our feature on CBS News also help to spread the word, so much so, that we began hiring other teachers and tutors to cover the growing demand. Today our company has expanded. We cover much of the DFW metroplex as well as parts of Irving and Plano. We recently launched our monthly book club, and are gearing up for our virtual early reading academy. We still offer all of our original services; however, most are done virtually unless a customer requests otherwise. We also serve as a tutoring agency for teachers and tutors looking to fill the growing demand. We have been blessed to be able to do what we love, as well as give other teachers opportunities to work in a small, safe, stress-free environment. Founded by educators for educating.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Things have been more amazing than we could have ever expected. However, things did get a little rocky when schools began to open back up, and parents were called to go back to working in office. But when one door closes another one opens. Although our number of school-aged pods decreased, we saw a growing increase in our supplemental tutoring and Early Reading programs, so much so, that we began offering virtual sessions to fulfill the demand.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a currently a Texas Teacher certified in EC-8th Grade. I have had the opportunity to work with Dallas ISD, and have been a private tutor for the past 5 years now as well. My favorite group of students to educate so far have been preschool-aged. They are in my opinion a beautiful challenge because we get to help mold their first academic experiences. I’m most known for my eclectic appearance and bubbly and energetic personality and teaching style. I am most proud of the way the parents and students we serve really connect with us. Seeing the look on a child’s face when the light in their brains switch on, or the proud and impressed look a parent gives when discovering that their child has retained new knowledge warms my heart every time. The thing that sets us apart the most would be our appearance because we do not convey that look of “normal” teachers. We are ourselves at every session and our families love that because it provided them a sense of a school-family environment. Another thing that sets us apart from other services are our very diversified clients. We serve students whom are not only different ethnicities, but in different parts of the world, and each bond that we share with them provides a unique learning experience for us all, as we get the opportunity to share cultures.

We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?
My favorite childhood memory was playing school with my friends and siblings. Explaining math problems that they might not have understood, and using the mirror as my dry erase board. Of course, I would ALWAYS be the teacher. I loved it because it always gave me the opportunity to relearn or reteach myself the information that I may otherwise have not been able to understand and helped me to retain it. In Hindsight I guess I was also tutoring them and Myself at the same time.
