Meet Taylor Lawson of Love Lawson Boutique

Today we’d like to introduce you to Taylor Lawson.

Taylor, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Since I was a kid I have always had a passion for merchandising and fashion design. In fact, when I was in grade school I would make tiny purses out of felt or any kind of material I could get my hands on and sell them to classmates or at my daycare. I even personalized a few for some friends back in the day. As I grew older I got more and more interested in fashion design and would eat, sleep and breath in fashion magazines, pop culture, music, movies and art.

My mom always said I was never one to let others dress me as I was too “opinionated” to let anyone tell me what to wear or how to wear something. I think that’s why I love fashion and design in general. I believe it is a form of art and self-expression. I personally just love observing people and how they choose the clothing that they wear every day to express themselves.

When I pursued my degree in Merchandising and Digital Retail I went on to do internships for online retailers and wholesalers, all while working at the local college magazine to make some extra cash because we all know college is not cheap. After I graduated I got a job at a multi-media market company as a web site consultant. But as I started to work in the corporate world I became dissatisfied with the day to day struggle of being at a job that just didn’t speak to my passions. I am thankful for working in the corporate world for over two years as it gave me the experience in the real world that one would need in order to keep working hard and pursue my goals in life. One day last year I decided to take a leap of faith and pursue my passions. I began researching and developing my Online Women’s Boutique to figure out what direction I wanted to go in. By opening my own online boutique I have found a way to utilize all of my talents from design, fashion, and photography. I am very excited to start this journey or the next chapter in my life.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
No, it has not. I had to work hard to develop a brand. Also dealing with the state from; setting up all the proper licenses and accounts to make sure I am doing this all correctly. You definitely want to make sure all of your information and licenses are correct when it comes to being a small business. It takes a lot of research and sleepless nights to build your own business from the ground up. It also takes a lot of vulnerability. I think it’s always hard to put yourself out there fully and this business has become basically my “baby”. Especially since I’m a very private person so definitely being that person who is putting their heart and soul into a business and making it public has been a huge thing for me personally.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
Love Lawson Boutique is an online women’s boutique. We specialize in finding and curating pieces for real women with real bodies. I being a little curvy myself find it difficult to buy clothing online and get disappointed when things don’t fit or don’t look like what the store shows. I’ve chosen models of all shapes and sizes to showcase that with the clothing. I even offer plus-size pieces as it is very hard to find Plus size clothing available that is something that I would want to wear. I think in this day and age designers are started to be more size-inclusive but a lot of online retailers rarely ever carry items that Plus size would want to actually wear.

What were you like growing up?
I come from a military family and growing up I was always surrounded by different people of different cultures. I was always wearing weird or different outfits as I would never let me mom dress me. (I used to hate wearing dresses and frilly clothing of the 90’s). I would always pay attention to clothes while shopping with my mom. Not just look at them but look at the detail and stitching. Because of this interest, my grandmother taught me how to sew clothing for my barbies and then I learn how to make clothing for myself as I got older. Knowing how to sew also helped me because I’m fairly short and curvy so I had to tailor a lot of my clothing myself when I was in high school.

I had a lot of interests growing up. Very typically I liked to shop but I also was considered “weird” for going to say a thrift store or wearing clothing that didn’t fit in with the trend.
