Today we’d like to introduce you to Taylor Tucker.
Taylor, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Touch-N-Skin (a T (Taylor) & S (Saliymah) theme) actually started as an idea because I am an Esthetician and my partner is a massage therapist. My partner is from Buffalo, New York and moved down here three years ago because she wanted a change. Ironically, we went to the same school to get our license (she was starting when I was graduating), and we hung around the same people, but we didn’t cross paths until we were introduced by a mutual friend and every since we have been attached at the hip. We both had been talking about creating an establishment that caters entirely to the relaxation of your body and predominately providing the knowledge and promoting the minority community to focus on the benefits of maintaining your personal health; which is how we came up with the name Touch (Massage)-N- Skin (Skincare). After a year of ” talking” about it; we finally made it happen by starting with Pop-Up shops at local salons and barber shops to host customer appreciation events or provide a way for barbers and stylists to upcharge their services and bring in more clientele. Now we are successfully up and running, and within a well known and energetic salon called E.G.O. Salon & Spa.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Is that a trick question? Lol, How many companies do you know of that open up and everything goes EXACTLY as planned? Lol, We were not one of those companies because everything that COULD go wrong went wrong. We have had sooooooooo many trials and tribulations, along with trying to balance our investment company on top of our spa. We tried going into business with a few different people and ended up on the short end of the stick. It was actually after the realization that we couldn’t trust anyone except each other; that we decided to go ahead and do things ourselves and make things shake. However, when we came to that realization, we came across issues with our location and ended up having to move and look for a new location. Opening up the spa was probably the most stressful because we had the vision and the clients, but no location. Erica at E.G.O. gave us a location, and every since then business has been great.
Touch-N-Skin – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Touch-N-Skin is a total body wellness spa that is not only working on your external, but we are also teaching/ providing you with the knowledge to work on yourself internally. My name is Taylor and I am the Esthetician of the company. What is an Esthetician? I get that alot. Lol, but I deal with everything skincare related. Acne, Back Acne, blackheads, aging skin, hyperpigmentation, and all of the above. I specialize in blackhead removals and men’s scalp treatments. I am that esthetician that loves to see drastic results, which is why I am excited for May 15th when we will begin offering Chemical Peels and the launch of our skincare and massage product line. Saliymah (Lema) is the Massage therapist of our company, and she is small but she packs a punch. Her specialty is deep tissue massages because she lovesssss to watch her clients leave her table and feel like a new person.
What makes us the most proud about our company is that we are finally open and successfully running. For over a year and a half, so many doors were closed on us, and we each personally went through life issues, but we never gave up on that dream. I am proud of the reputation we are slowly building and the recognition we have obtained. What mainly sets us apart from others is the fact that we are doing what we love with the mindset to help others, and teach them the importance of keeping up a routine. It is not about the money, but more about making a community aware of how important it is to take care of yourself FIRST and everything else second.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
In my opinion, success is not defined by the materialistic objects that you have obtained, but by the personal goals that you have successfully accomplished and mastered to the best of your ability. If your goal is to lose 10lbs in one month, and you manage to lose 11lbs, then you have succeeded in what you set out to do. Success is dependent upon your own personal goals, and how it will help YOU grow. My criteria is nonexisting when it comes to how I view my success because timelines for reaching those milestones, and I push myself daily to achieve that. I have daily, weekly, monthly and yearly successes that I plan to achieve, but I don’t push myself to astronomical lengths in order to fit into what society has deemed as success. My only marker for success would probably be making sure that I am ALWAYS happy, and smiling (even on my worst day) because showing gratitude for all that you have obtained is a success in my eyes.
