Today we’d like to introduce you to Taylor Wallace.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I’ve always been intrigued with the nail industry. I remember when I was younger my dad always fussed about nail polish, so I wore clear nail polish until I was in middle school. I anxiously waited until High School. My freshman year for my mom allowed me to do nail enhancements for my band banquet. That’s when the obsession began. I kept my nails done and polished. No chipped polish in site. Throughout High School, I collected nail polish. I eventually got to over 100 bottles of polish. I would always ask my friends if I could polish their nails. When I went off to college, I continued to ask my friends if I could polish their nails. I also found myself watching nail videos by other nail technicians.
Polishing nails and applying acrylic is a way for me to escape the constant chatter in my brain. The stroke of the brush soothes me. In 2016 I started back entertaining the thought of doing nails. Christmas of 2016 I received about 20 gel polishes and a LED lamp as a gift from my guy. From there I started polishing my mom’s, grandmothers, and sister’s nails. I eventually got an e-file and additional manicure equipment. My baby sister was my first client. She was loyal and supportive. Although at that time I did not have a clue about applying acrylic only the idea from getting my nails done and watching videos, She still walked around flaunting her nails as if they were done by the best nail tech in the city.
In 2017 with the support of my family, my guy, and friends, I went to school. While going to school, I practiced on many of my family and friends. During my journey, I found myself comparing myself to other nail techs which caused me to be insecure because my work was not good in my eyes. Overtime I had to adjust my mind set. I came to a realization that you cannot get anywhere in life comparing yourself to others. Your journey is for you and you only. I began looking at my previous work to see how far I have come and how I can improve my application. Once I started focusing on myself, I began to see a change, less bumps and lumps in my acrylic application. While I was in school I played with the idea of having my own business. I did not know the first thing about owning a business and I still have a lot to learn. I have attended a few seminars to help with both managing my business and social media presence.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It has not been a smooth road. Since I work another job outside of doing nails along with being a mother, finding the motivation to keep pushing can be slightly difficult. We are all human. Sometimes I have those days where I do not want to do anything. On those days I take a few minutes to regroup and think about why I’m doing this. That keeps me going. On those overwhelming days, I practice nail art and application, I sit my daughter in front of me and allow her to polish a mannequin finger. Although this is not my only struggle, it is the one that trumps any other internal and external struggle.
