Today we’d like to introduce you to Kylah Henry.
So, before we jump into specific questions, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Team Athena was developed in January of 2019 with the intention of creating an inclusive environment for female dancers in Dallas to train and compete. Under the direction of Evan Miller, Darius Brown, Edward Refuerzo Jr. and Tamara Valle, the team debuted its first set at World of Dance Dallas that same year.
With current directors Kylah Henry and Darius Brown, Team Athena has developed into a true sisterhood, boasting women from all walks of life and dance backgrounds. Nearly two years later, the team has doubled in size and plans to continue training and competing at a professional level. Photoshoots, video shoots, performance opportunities, and other gigs are a few of the experiences the team offers its members. Team Athena stands as a home for fierce, committed, and passionate women looking to join a sisterhood bonded by dance. The team hopes to continue to be a driving force and creative outlet for female dancers in Dallas.
Has it been a smooth road?
At its conception, Team Athena was a puzzle piece for a larger organization, Diamond City Dance Studios. Originally named Dancing For a Cause, that studio housed many other teams such as the youth group, ImpactNChange and the adult competitive team, The Neighborhood. Under the direction of studio owner, Tanjim Rahman, Team Athena had a place to call home in its earlier stages, a time for which the organization will forever be grateful. Unfortunately, like many other businesses, the studio was forced to close as a result of the pandemic.
Following the closing of the studio, the transition to functioning as an independent team has been as exciting as it has been challenging. Finding a new studio space, keeping the team members engaged, and determining ways to stay active and creative in lieu of competition cancellations has been the most difficult aspect of our journey thus far.
We’d love to hear more about your organization.
Team Athena specializes in modern, feminine, hip hop choreography. We are most proud of the diverse range of women on our team, whether that be by nationality, dance background, size, or age. To have something as powerful as dance bring so many different young women together is a beautiful thing to witness.
How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
Team Athena is a legacy in the making. In 5-10 years, we hope to be working with artists, performing in live shows, traveling for global competitions and more! There are so many worlds to conquer in the realm of dance that expand outside the confines of Texas, and we hope to show the world just what our girls are made of.
